Default KEEPING SAME PHONE NUMBER REGARDLESS

People I heard there is this option where you can keep the same phone number regardless which service provider you switch to. Does anyone have any information on this and when is this law or whatever it is, going into effect and in which States?

Default KEEPING SAME PHONE NUMBER REGARDLESS

Wireless Number Portability goes into effect Nov 24th, assuming no further delays, in the top 100 markets in the US. You will be able to take your number with you when you change carriers in the same area.

look up WNP at google. You'll find a boat load of info there.

It should go into effect Nov. 24, but the courts still have time to push the date back, as I think they have done previously. Also, most companies will charge for letting you port "their" number to a new provider.

Not that I plan to switch carriers any time soon...but with all the additions of new area codes, I hope the Portability issue isn't pushed back! Most recently, I heard they wanted to split Riverside County's area code again because the cell phones, pda's, etc have exhausted the Riverside County area. Being able to prevent this would be less on the taxpayer...

My 2 cents...

They're two separate issues. Also, all new area codes in California have been suspended by the CPUC, including the 310 (4 remaining exchanges), which is closer to exhaust than the 909 (6 exchanges). There have been public meetings, but that's about it. No area code will be implemented for at least six months.

(FYI: the CPUC approved plan is a split and overlay, with Arlington, Banning, Corona, Elsinore, Hemet/Anza, Hemet/Hemet, Hemet/San Jacinto, Homeland, Idyllwild (Riverside Co.), Lakeview, Mira Loma, Moreno, Murrieta, Perris, Riverside, Sun City, Temecula, Temescal Cyn, Woodcrest areas changing to 951 and Arrowhead, Big Bear City, Big Bear Lake, Calimesa, Chino, Colton, Claremont-San Dimas, Crestline, Diamond Bar, Etiwanda, Fontana, Marshall, Mentone, Pomona, Ontario, Redlands, Rialto, Running Springs, San Bernardino, Upland areas keeping 909 and overlaying 752, which means you will have to dial 1 plus the area code for every call, even if it's the same area code.

They were going to split the 707 area code up too, with everything from Mendocino County north to the end of it at the Oregon border staying 707, and Sonoma, Napa and Contra Costa Counties getting 2 new area codes, thankfully, it's been shelved

For the time being. You only have 60 or so NXXes left.

They won't do it, the whole North Coast is too tied to the 707 area code, it's kind of like a trademark to the area, 707 essentially equals wine, redwoods and coastal views, and I think they will exhaust all other options before ever doing it.
