Sprint has proposed a new antenna just about 1/2 mile away from my house in the City of Orange. It has received preliminary approval by the design review committee but still has to go for public hearing before the planning commission. The antenna is proposed to be attached to an existing Edison utility tower which is pretty close to some houses. The tenative hearing date is November 5th but that is subject to change according to someone in the planning dept I spoke with. I plan on attending this meeting to show my support for the project even if it means going against my neighbors. This will be my first time attending a public hearing for a cell site. I'll keep this thread updated as I find out more.

Ok here's an update on this. The hearing for this antenna will be held on Novemeber 17th! I will be at the meeting to fight the NIMBY's. I'll give an update on the outcome when I get back home on the 17th. I'm getting nervous about it already.

Larry, I've spoken at a few public hearings. Call the Council Clerk to have your name added to the list of speakers for the night. Be prepared, be brief and be light. Use phrases like, "we all know how frustrating it is to be in an area with poor cell service..." and "having good cell service, thus an alternative access to the internet, increases the desirability and the value of our homes..." Fortunately, Orange has lots of cell sites, so they pretty much just need to determine how well Sprint has done its homework to make the site agreeable. -Bill |

I just found out that Cingular has jointly filed with Sprint to locate on that SCE tower near my house! That means that the city would be hard pressed to deny both carriers access to this tower. I like my chances better now although it sucks that Cingular will have the same coverage! I was hoping Sprint would be the only carrier with a tower up here. Hey Mike why don't you come down to So. CA and attend the hearing with me? lol Or anyone else here in OC that uses Sprint or Cingular can come as well. The more support the better as this could be only the second time in which an antenna will be allowed in a residential area in my city.

Approved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just got back from the planning commission hearing right now. It ran very late. I almost fell asleep waiting from 6:45 PM until I was called up. The Sprint tower wasn't even heard until 11:15 PM and by then most people had cleared out of the meeting. I went up and spoke in favor of the project and the commission made the motion to approve with very little discussion. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] This was final determination. The city council will not have to hear the project so it's a done deal. Turns out that one of the planning commission members is my neighbor who lives only a couple of houses away! I think that also helped me out. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] The Sprint rep at the meeting told me that the project would likely be completed sometime in March. I can't wait! |

Congrats larry! I would be right there with you if I was in California. I think the more towers out there, the better the service (obviously) and the more customers would stay with Sprint! Anyway, glad to hear that things went well and hope the construction goes as planned and you all have better service because of it!

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I even got to see a Sprint internal RF propogation map that shows the quality of the current coverage in my area and another map that shows what the coverage will look like after the antenna is up. It shows my street with better coverage (purple instead of yellow) after the new antenna. |

Congrats Larry! I have a Sprint tower right behind my mom's house in DE, yet the coverage isn't great ( I don't even "see" the tower on my phone). So maybe the new tower might not face your way either [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img].

In this case it will hit my area. I saw the Sprint RF propogation map (before and after) for my area and the new tower will improve coverage. From my bedroom window upstairs I can actually see the tower.

Well I just found out that it's official. Cingular will be locating their site right next to Sprint's on the Edison tower. In additon they got approved to bring in a COW (cell on wheels) for up to 6 months while they plan construction of their permanent facility. This kind of sucks because Sprint should have done the same thing. Cingular will have better coverage up here within a couple of weeks (with the COW) while Sprint won't have better coverage until the permanent facility is completed, which won't happen until next March or April.
