Default NW vzw local vs national coverage

I guess you could say I am new here but I have been stumbling over this website for more than a year and finally found a question I feel is good enough to ask. I live in spokane and have the vzw local plan, I was just wondering how much better the coverage is than the national plan? I was wondering if I should upgrade my plan to a national plan, or add the national coverage for 5$ more, can you use your phone outside my "home area" or will I be charged roaming and long distance if I go to...say...montana? I travel all over the north west ALL THE TIME, but make road trips out of the northwest about once a month and would like to make calls, would it be better to just switch over to the national plan?

The national plan your thinking of is the Americas Choice plan. You will not be charged for roaming on the Americas Choice network, which is whenever your phone says verizon or extended network. Many parts of Montana are covered by the Americas CHOCIE network, but check the maps to see if it covers hwere you need it.
