You are right. Some phones are single band, usually 1900. Some are dual, 800-850 & 1900, and some are tri-band. Tri's are typically international phones with 1800 (Euro standard), 800, 1900.

Also common are 900/1800/1900.

GSM on the 1900 band is the most common in the US, though 850 GSM is being turned on more and more. Carriers like AT&T are using both 1900 and 850, while their affiliates, Edge Wireless and Suncom are strictly 1900, which gives them an advantage in that when the overlayed their GSM onto their TDMA, they already had the 1900 tower spacing, and aren't having the problems of their parent, AT&T, who is overlaying 1900 GSM onto towers spaced for 850. AT&T is starting to put up 850 GSM, but not as fast as they need to be from the posts I'm seeing.

Not necessarily. First of all you can only use the 1800 band when you are out of this country. Second, 800-850 for GSM is even a rarer breed than 1900 for GSM. What I would find a "turn off" is anything that doesn't have decent wireless service for the area(s) you are in most frequently. If you are a globe trotter, you may want the GSM tri-band. If you travel within the USA, I would much more highly recommend ATT TDMA or Verizon's CDMA network. Both have phones with analog as a backup service.

If you, like myself, live and work within a 60 mile radius and that whole area is well covered by GSM, then, since most of GSM is on the 1900 band here in America, that shouldn't be a concern.

Again, don't worry to much about the technology. Worry about the practical issues like:
1. Do I have coverage where I most need it?
2. Can I live with the monthly costs the carrier's plans offer?
3. Do I like the phone I am selecting and does it perform well?

If you get GSM with Cingular or ATT get a phone with 850 GSM on it if you travel at all, its better than 1900 and you will want to use it whenever you can, even if tahts not often. With TMO dont bother with bands, because they have no 800 networks in place, and do not allow 800 roaming.

900 and 1800 are strictly non north american bands

where do you live?

the next market that cingular absolutely needs to enter is Minnesota. maybe once they get all the nextwave spectrum they will, but they should at least sell service there w/ tmobiles network like the deal in a few other places.
