Default GMS prepaid service?

Are there any gsm prepaid services? I would like to buy a smaller phone but it appears no one offers gsm phones with prepaid. (att has go phones but that is not the same as free to go prepaid). I am asking about gsm because it appears that is the future technology. I would rather not buy an older technology like tdma or cdma if I don't have to.
Also any thoughts about virgin mobile. I like their audiovox 8610.

T-Mobile Easyspeak. http://www.t-mobile.com/prepaid. The phone works where ever T-Mobile has service.

You can also try the AT&T GoPhone. It's a little more than pre-pay. You select a plan, and on $39.99 and up you get unlimmited nights and weekends. All you have to do is buy the phone, free activation, and give them your back account and it's taken out monthly on a certain day. They have better phones than other pre-pays.

Actually, you only get unlimited weekends now. They took away unlimited nights some time ago. You also pay $39.99 plus tax, plus fees disguised as taxes, so the bill really ends up being closer to $50.

For high-volume users who insist on prepaid, this is still the best deal. However, Cingular will let you sign up without a contract (you just pay full price for the handset), and all except their $20 rate plan handily beats GoPhone. Their credit standards are pretty lax, too--not as easy as Sprint, but close.

T-Mobile's prepaid rates are, frankly, awful. They charge 40 cents per minute for EasySpeak. The only advantage is that they work nationwide (but so does Virgin Mobile, who has much more coverage and much better pricing). Cingular offers regional prepaid plans, and beats Virgin Mobile pricing for some users. KIC usage is 35 cents peak, and 10 cents after 7pm, on weekends, or to other KIC customers.
