If you want contract (pay-monthly) service, you have three choices in Our Fair City... Cingular, T-Mobileicon, and AT&Ticon. Cingular and T-Mobileicon use the same towers so the coverage is identical. I have heard that if you bring a phone to Cingular, they won't force you to sign a one-year (or two-year) commitment.

T-Mobileicon are probably the cheapest. Cingular have the "rollover" minutes, where minutes you don't use are stored in a minutes-bank for you for up to twelve months to offset your going over your minutes. AT&Ticon have the newest GSM system and I haven't heard a lot of great things about it.

In any case, if they give you grief, take the cheapest phone they offer and keep it as a spare... then stick your SIM into your 6100.
