I have been watching answers here and some of you really know one heck of a lot about the technology, the providers, coverage, etc. Some of you remind me of bird watchers or trainspotters (not a bad thing nor is it a putdown) with your knowledge of antennae's, dead spots, plans, etc. So, how DID you acquire your knowledge? Hobby? Through work in "the biz"? Accretion over time? Osmosis? Thanks.

I was an RF systems Engineer for a wireless company that built 2-way systems and GSM/UMTS stuff in Europe, and did a bit of Voicestream build out. Before that I built cellsites for a company that held cellular licences here and there in Arizona and Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Wyoming where the carriers did not build out so we take over the license and build a few sites. And Before that I installed and sold cell phones back in the MicroTac days and bag phones, and Motorola Bricks, when digital was just coming out in LA. Plus I also have friends who work for Qualcomm, and BTCellnet( I do not remember what they go by now), Nextel and Vodaphone. If you hang out in these forums enough you will pick up a lot of info. I learn something new all the time.

I was senior technician at Nextels 2nd largest service center in Michigan for a while. I have been with Verizon/Airtouch/Cellular One since 1991 and have kept up on their technology as well as cellular technology in General through the internet, friends inside other providers, and reading a lot of books. What can I say, I am a die hard techie

So do you guys check availability on drives? Look at your bars or when the phone has no serice? Those of you, like TProphet, who write trip reports of coverage....do you keep logs of when and where you have / don't have service?

I agree with ZaphodB, and would also add that I read a lot, and write very little.

I think you will find a lot of current, and former, engineers...ect. from wireless companies. I am an Operations Manager (I run the switches and sites) for a carrier. There are many fine people in these forums glad to share their knowledge, and pick up a few things they didn't already know. In this business, it is impossible to know it all, but you do learn something new every day. Good luck!
