ok, sprint is CDMA, verizon is also CDMA. verizon is cellular, while sprint is not. if both of them are CDMA and use digital signals, why is it that one is cellular and not the other? is the only differnece the frequency of operation? also, what is cellular anyway?

I'll try on this one... Cellular means 800Mhz also known as 850Mhz and provides Analog as well. TDMA and CDMA networks that run at 800Mhz are cellular as they were originally Analog networks and have the A and B licenses in each market. A is the non-wireline carrier and B is the wireline carrier. 1900Mhz or 1.9Ghz is known as PCS and not cellular.

Just remember: If your carrier is in the 800 MHz range it's generally referred to as cellular. If it is in the 1900 MHz range, it is usually referred to as PCS. I think certain bands are given names to differentiate themselves. No matter what frequency your carrier utilizes, they still require "cell" sites to operate and they still use "cell" phones for wireless communication. There are some areas of the country where VZW owns PCS licenses.

man, this is complicated!!! so the only difference is the frequency... wow, so now i have a followup question for all of you. i heard reacetly that in europe they used to call these devices "cellular phones", but now they are called "mobiles". they do not use "cellular" anymore. is this just a cultural trend, or is there some base to this? maybe to differenciate between analog and GSM?

Hey, I don't think there was ever such a thing as analog in Europe... And as far as I know, cellphones in Europe are most always called Mobile Phones( I mean even in Britain, right?)... ~Andy | |
