Heres my problems, I have Cingular as my main provider, and i have Verizon as my secondary provider. I had verizon about 8 years ago and then left them for AT&T which was the best in Cali at that time. (and i mean the best) Nowi have Verizon on a $15 a month plan for "in calling" because this way i can talk to my Verizon friends and Cingular friends for free. The only problem is that almost everywhere i go i am dropping calls or have "no service" I have called cs many times and they tell me that it is that i don't know how to use my phone properly. Is Verizon service really this bad? I have been all over Cali and have a very hard time getting good service everywhere. It is not a problem with my phone, I took it in to a store and they said that nothing was wrong with it. I even bought a new phone that has never been used and i still have the problems. I am seriously thinking about swiching to a T-Mobile Sidekick. Any thoughts? I never have any problems with Cingular and i have traveled all of Cali. and 95% of the places i have good to great service. Is the T-Mobile Sidekick a good phone and does it have fast web access? What should i do?

That's really odd. I have a couple of friends from Northern California that have Verizon and they both love their service. Verizon is generally very good in California although like any wireless provider it has weak spots. Out of curiousity what phone do you currently use with Verizon? |

If there is nothing wrong with your phone, then there is not much anyone can do for you. You need to ditch the service if it doesn't meet your needs. Remember these three rules in wireless: 1) It's you 2) It's your phone 3) It's your wireless provider If number one and two do not apply, then your network provider (VZW) is not working for you. You seem really unlucky to have experienced such bad service all over a State as large as California. Most Californians polled feel otherwise. Good luck with your new provider.

As others have noted, Verizon's ratings for California are good. California is a massive state, so it helps to indicate more specifically where you are seeing trouble. Although the Verizon store told you its not your phone- just reading your report really sounds like a bad phone to me. Verizon has native service in much of populated California, and also roams on other carriers in some places. The tough spots to cover are areas that are rural having little or no population (mountains, woods, etc). If you're having problems in-town, and at multiple locations, chances are the problem is something to do with your phone. Also check with friends who use the service and see what their experience is. If you've found one or more others who say "Verizon sucks in this area" then you may simply need to use Cingular (or other provider). Each national carrier has some areas where their service isn't great. It would be incorrect, however, to say Verizon "sucks" in California everywhere... -Dan |

Everyone remembers Lake and Mendocino counties as a bad spot because there was one poster that would repeat it again and again and again. It made it seem like it was a big impact on many users. There likely are other areas that no one posts about. It's the same with all carriers. G. | |

and eastern Kentucky (east of Bluegrass's footprint, it's all AMPS roaming, on Cingular, no less!)... and parts of metro Atlanta (oversold, site placement issues, letting voice go to pot while building out EV-DO)... and don't expect seamless coverage between any two cities in Alabama (except in the northern third of the state)...no-thanks, Unicel... The situation with VZW and Lake/Mendo reminds me of the situation with Cingular in parts of southeast Tennessee -- they themselves admit they suck but won't do anything about it. -SC

Where are you having coverage problems, I have used my Verizon service in Yuba city, down to Sacto, without problems and up to Grass Valley Area. Now I do not live there so I was not in every area around Yuba City.

JOrdan, it really does sound like a phone issue. What phone do you have right now? I'd suggest trying something like a MOto V710/E815 or a Nokia. |

It is very important to understand that you may live one block from my home and consistentely get a very strong signal while I drop calls or cannot get a signal at all. Cellular transmissions are line-of-sight and are blocked by hills, building and other terrain. Just because you have great service at your home does not mean that you will have service at my home that is located one block away. Regards, -jim |
