| Cingular Wireless To Invest $22 Million Throughout Hawaii To Enhance Service Quality and Expand Coverage Company to Build More Than 22 Cell Sites to Better Serve its ALLOVER(SM) Network Customers HONOLULU, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless, the country's largest wireless provider, announced it will invest about $22 million throughout Hawaii in 2005 to install over 22 new cell sites as part of a $6.2 billion commitment to enhance and expand its ALLOVER(SM) network* nationwide. Already this year, Cingular has put new sites into service in Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. In addition, the company has expanded capacity statewide. The network improvements will enable Cingular customers in Hawaii to experience the highest level of voice service quality and offer some of the most advanced data services to more customers in more places. "Better coverage is what wireless consumers want, and better coverage is exactly what Cingular is delivering," said Tammi Terrell, vice president and general manager, Hawaii/San Diego/Las Vegas. "We are continually making improvements to our network so that our Hawaii customers have a quality wireless experience." Last year, Cingular invested more than $9 million dollars, in network upgrades to improve coverage and offer enhanced services throughout Hawaii. Cingular customers will have access to some 45,000 cell sites nationally by the end of 2006. The company already offers customers access to the largest digital voice and data network in America, and Hawaii is an important part of that network. "This investment demonstrates our commitment to aggressively continue to provide quality service throughout Hawaii and the mainland," said Terrell. "That strong customer focus is one of the reasons Cingular serves more than 51 million customers -- the first wireless carrier to attain this important growth milestone. Our valued Hawaii customers know they can rely on us to meet their needs." Cingular's ALLOVER network now covers more than 270 million people, and provides service throughout the United States including the top 100 markets. Customers on specific calling plans now have access to the largest mobile-to- mobile calling community in the country -- with rate plans offering unlimited access to more than 51 million people. As part of its network build-out and enhancement, Cingular has stepped up efforts to ensure its investments to extend coverage and enhance quality are realized. The company expects its employees and those of other third-party companies to drive test its network nearly 30 million miles over the next year -- that's the equivalent of more than 50 round trips to the moon. CINGULAR to install over 22 new cell SITES in HAWAII

Good luck to Cingular with the NIMBY's over there in Hawaii. It's very tough to get 22 new sites approved in Hawaii in one year.

And they DESPERATELY need it. Cingular has horrible coverage on the Big Island unless you're between Hapuna Beach and Kona, or if you're right in Hilo or Volcano.

My friend said he had great coverge using a Cingular/ATTWS TDMA multinetork phone in the islands. What the article doesn't say, are these brand new towers or is Cingular going to convert the ATTWS TDMA/Analog towers to GSM, for better reception on their new GSM only phones? I'm sure there is some relationship to building out the GSM networks (at the expense of TDMA and analog spectrum), but Cingular doesn't seem to talk very much about conversion of the acquired ATTWS system to GSM. |
