Default NameMyNumber - bring new life to your phonenumber

Would you like one of those "800-FastCar" telephonenumbers?
Perhaps your phonenumber isn't as boring and hard to remember as you think.

You'll find the "Name My Number" generator at http://www.namemynumber.com. (It's free). The generator will try to make sensible names out of your phone number.

If you get a really good name for your number, perhaps you could post it as a reply to this thread?
- A friend of mine got "babyglue" from his number (I think that was kind of funny... )

That's the same as www.phonetic.com I've used it for years. One of my friends numbers ended up being 659-ODOR. We still get laughs about that to this day.

Now that you mention it I did have a program that did that on my Commodore 64 back in the very early 80's, and I also recall writing a program that did that on an Apple IIe in high school. (late 80's)

Also on a related note by following the link below you will be lead to a list of recommended exchange names issued by Bell Telephone in the 50's. I personally like calling my Mom's number PLaza 2-xxxx.

http://www.phonespell.org does the same thing.

My phone number used to be 750-TUSH... and then there was the time it was 382-5968 (before they removed that from the list of available numbers along with 328-7448 and the like).

Now the question is, how many people had party lines? Or exchanges where you didn't have to dial the first three numbers (i.e., my number was 2918 if you called me from in town)? And if you wanted to call another town it was 1+the seven digit number?

I grew up as MEadow 4-0215.

We had a party line when I was a kid, up until about 1985 or so. I remember when I was a kid before our exchange was upgraded to touch tone I could dial my best friend's number 752-9330 by dialing 2-9330. This only worked when dialing other numbers in the 752 exchange though. I couldn't dial Fredericksburg (373-xxxx) by dialing 3-xxxx.

I was on a four-party line in Iowa in 1998... when I moved out, the landlord had the lines upgraded to a regular single-party touch-tone line. For about a month we could dial anyone's number in town by calling the last four digits (because it all started with 934), but then the co-op made us start dialling all seven digits. My ring was short-long-short... but I bought a cell phone anyway because my neighbours always listened in on the phone.

People still gave their phone number as four numbers, though... so if you called the bank and they needed to call you back, you'd say "My number is 2918."

Another one of those common phrases now gone down to dust. "May I have the line, please, this is an emergency."

Our line was a 2 party line, and we shared with a retired couple who lived 3 houses down. They were snowbirds and were gone for 6 months out of the year. Dad said only once did he ever pick up the phone and someone else was on it. I don't ever remember picking up the phone and someone else was on. I believe our exchange was set up with frequency ringers so you didn't know when your neighbor's phone was ringing.

I have been and always will be, XXX-EVIL. Although, it came up with XXX-DUH5, which I thought was rather amusing, as well... DUH5
