Found this nice web page that may help with one that I have always wondered while driving around - whose tower is this one? http://www.geckobeach.com/cellular/cellpixs/cellid.asp |

Which tower are you asking about? The one displayed below? ![]() Looks like a Bell or Telus CDMA tower if you ask me since it doesn't look like a GSM tower. Then again, the towers and rooftop cell antennas look differently here in Germany.

None in particular - I just have seen several designs and have wondered if there are specific ones with certain carriers, or technologies.

Question...what does the shielding around some panels do?? I see a lot of Verizon cellsites in my areas having those shieldings, but can never make out what they're for. Thanks, Andy | |

I am guessing that US and Canadian towers would look similar, as it is likely that they are made by the same tower manufacturers - I assume it would be easier for Canadian/US operators to get North American products than European ones.......

Actually, you see some stuff in Canada that you don't see in the US, especially the small microwave dishes in every tower. Those are very common in Canada. However, the way the panels or the arrangement looks like really depends on what vendor the carrier uses. So in some areas they look one way and in another area they may look different, since most likely they had bought from different vendors for different areas. I can usually tell what is a GSM tower from a CDMA tower but not what carrier it belongs to. GSM sites usually have a small square or diamond-like antenna just above the panels. AT&T, T-Mobile and Cingular use them in most of their sites here. Nextel usually has a reflector behind the panels. Sprint sites are usually white and thin. Verizon panels are usually gray and old looking, unless you are in one of their PCS areas. In that case, you couldn't tell a Verizon site apart from a Sprint site.
