Default Contract Question

I'm still under contract with the old AC 400 min. plan for $39.99 a month. If I switch to the new AC (no roaming) 450 min. plan for the same price, do I have to sign a new contract? And If I do, can I get the new contract phone discount?

it depends on how long you've had your current plan.

How long of a contract did you sign up for originally and how long have you been on it? If you're in the last 2 months of your contract, you're eligible for a phone upgrade discount. If you change contracts, you will probably get a new contract. However, this new contract with ONLY affect when your account goes to month-to-month and you can't be charged an ETF. A new contract will NOT affect when you can get a phone upgrade discount.

* For example, my dad got my phone as part of a FS in December 2002 and signed a 2 yr contract. I was eligible for a phone upgrade in October 2004.
* In June 2004, I signed a 1 yr contract for my wife's phone. She is eligible for an upgrade this month.
* In July 2004, I moved off the FS and into a new FS with my wife. My phone upgrade day didn't change.
* I got a new phone in November 2004.

That's the best real-life example I can give anyone.

Is that when you upgraded your phone? If so, you're not eligible for upgrade.

If you are referring to the "New Every Two" discount, then the answer is no. You will have to wait until about September 2006 for the NE2 discount to be available to you. Changing to a new plan and extending your contract will not affect your NE2 date.

So, if I switch to the 450 min. plan, I'll have to extend my contract?

When I changed to the 450 Min. plan I extended my contract. Check with the rep you are speaking with to make sure. Sometimes it extends, sometimes it doesn't.

For me, contract extensions aren't an issue because I've had their service so long I have absolutely no plans on cancelling and moving elsewhere.

if you have to extend the contract, no you will not get a handset discount.

And depending on your market, you may or may not have to extend the contract. In my market you don't have to extend if you have more than 12 months remaining on the contract.

NE2 upgrades still count from the last time you had a NE2 upgrade, whether or not you upgrade/extend your contract for any other reason.
I, for example, had about 18 months left on my contract when I upgraded/changed plans and the lady changed my contract to expire in 12 months(not sure if she made a mistake or what), but my contract ended up being shorter than it was originally.

Inquire with customer service, and even check with a Verizon store and see what they tell you. I sometimes think the reps do what they want. See what you can work out. It's worth a try....

I don't think that is true anymore my roomate had to change his minutes and when he talked to CS they said now he would have to be extended 2 years becuase he did not complete the 1st year

Your phone upgrade date does not change if you change your contract date due to a plan change.

That doesn't make any sense, they have the Worry Free Guarantee that says you can move up and down in your plan without resigning a contract -- so if you have AC1 800 minutes and need to move to AC1 1200 or AC1 400, you wouldn't resign a contract. If you wanted to switch to AC2+InTXT, you might have to -- though when I moved to the new AC plans in January, I didn't have to extend mine.

Ok, for me to move from 400 to 450 minutes required a change in contract BECAUSE my AC plans were prior to the current AC plans. Basically I can move up or down within the current AC plans no problems. BUT, if new AC plans come out and I switch to them then I have to extend my contract.

Also, new equipment purchases is a SEPERATE DATE from contract end date.

For example, I changed from 400 w/unlimited nights and weekends + 1000 IN mintutes to the current 450 w/unlimited N, W, and IN recetntly. To do that I had to do a contract extension HOWEVER!!!!! my NE2 date is STILL October 6th of this year because I did not purchase a new phone at a subsidised price. Last time I did that was December 2003. My 9900 i bought full retail.
