I am moving to an area where my only option for high speed is an air card. I would like to use a magic jack with it, it works great on my dsl at my current home. My question is how much data does a phone call use up. The air card has a 5gig limit. We would not be using the phone that much, usually use my cell, but for some calls I would like to use the land based phone. Has anyone done this.

I use vonage, which, like magic jack, uses VOIP. However I have no idea how much the throughput for data is. Remember it is inbound and outbound so I would imagine it's a hog, like any other streaming media, but I have no way to measure it.

I currently use vonage at home and like it. Can it be used with an air card?

It would probably work OK. the biggest issue you will face is how much latency you have in the connection. I've tested anywhere from 150 ms to 800 ms on EVDO cards. If you have almost an entire second of latency in a phone call it is going to suck! But, if you have a good connection with low latency it can be OK. Data use shouldn't be bad unless magic jack used a really bad voice codec that takes a ton of bandwidth. I've used Skype over air cards before, in fact about 2 years ago I called into the The Cell Phone Junkie podcast and left Micky a voicemail demoing doing that over a Rev A connection. A voice only steam only uses about 60 or 70 kb per sec bit rate up and down. At data rates like that you will not break 100 megs of date per hour, so if you are only making a few calls, it's no big deal.
