| Yes, as it is a new release and subject to Verizon's new "mandatory data plan for smartphones" rule.

| Knowing the way Verizon is, I wouldn't put anything past them. Expect the data charge to be enforced and hope for the best that it won't (from a nice, willing to help rep...).

Now that I think of it though, it was said in posts about the data charges that new smartphones require a data plan to function properly. Whether this is an absolute is anyone's guess. You'll never know until it's time to call VZ customer service or visit a corporate store.

basically because you are the one buying/using/paying for the phone so the customer should be able to choose weather he/she really wants to pay/not pay for it | |

I agree. Verizon implemented these maddening changes within the last week (I think), and the purchase of any smartphone requires a minimum $30 data plan. If you have Pay Per Use, data block, or 10 MB for $25, it will remain on the account until you change data plans or devices. The only upside is that the newer smartphones have WiFi. Before, when they had the other data options, only 1 or 2 smartphones had it... perhaps, these draconian policies popped up just so they can get the feature packed phones |

There are free WiFi hotspots across the world... the wireless companies don't normally charge for it. It is up to the establishment; some charge and some don't. You can create your own if you desire as well.

Verizon's dropped the price of the Omnia to $199.99 (after the mail-in rebate, of course). Here's the link to the info: Verizon drops Omnia to $199, hopes you'll pay attention now - Engadget Mobile
