Default PDA/Smarthphone - Voice Only, Don't want data plan

I have a Treo650 I'd like to activate to use on VZW plan that is 34.99 (450 minutes) for voice only. However, as Verizon states in online docs and cust. service, you must have a data plan to activate a Smartphone/PDA. Is there a way to activate PDA/Smartphone without data plan? Can I get a data plan for a few months and then cancel it?

Also, phone was activated without data plan previously (previous owner). Could that help me make my case at all?

I'm a little upset about this. I don't understand why a PDA/Smartphone would require data access if it isn't used to retrieve any data...well I do understand that VZW wants to make money but this is an issue that I am willing to cancel my service with them. Other carriers seem to have increased service area to cover most of DC, where I live.

I just want to make phone calls, I will disable any data apps that might try to send data in the background or whatever. Any help is appreciated.

Haven't found any info on this and I've been getting varying responses from friends, colleagues, etc.

Thanks,

Rob

When I had a Motorola Q for Verizon they required that I also have a data plan. Since I was told that you must sign up for a data plan, I would suggest seeing if you could sign up for the pay as you go PDA plan on an America's Choice calling plan. I don't know if they still have that, since this was last year when I bought a Motorola Q.

I looked on Verizon's site and it looks like they don't have that option so you might want to stop in a store or call CS to see if it can be done.

Verizon does require you to sign up for a data plan with a data device. There are a few plans to chose from and one of them is the Pay as you Go Data plan...it's a per kb charge, if you don't use it, you won't get charged. While, in essence, it will not cost you anything to have this data plan on your account if you don't use it, Verizon still requires you to have a data plan...
Hope this answers your question, so when calling in ask about the pay as you go data plan.

I have a Treo 700p without data. When I initially bought it, data was required for a minimum time (can't remember). I have now requested a data block and just use it as a pda and backup phone. Don't know if the data requirement was related to purchase discount - i.e., maybe for an existing phone its no problem.

You are probably on the pay-as-you-go plan. I don't think they can activate a pda without putting a data plan on it. Might want to check on that.

Cool, thanks for all of the replies. I'm going to contact Verizon again tonight to ask about the Pay-as-you-go Data Plan. I'll put the results up here tonight or tomorrow.

Wow! I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time, and I've never had a problem before, but when I got on the phone with the CS rep and explained the issue, I was put on hold and then received a message stating, "Call could not be completed, please hang up and try the toll free number again."

I'll give it a try in the morning. Thanks again for everyone's input.

The data plan is required for at least three months in order to receive the $100 discount on the phone, after that you can switch to pay as you go usage which is 1.5 cents per kb.

Incorrect. They changed the policy. You must now keep it for at least half the life of your contract in order to prevent being backcharged for the discount. Also if you want you can set up a bogus connection under network to prevent connecting to the internet. This will prevent mms though. You could also call CS and have them put a data block on your phone.
