Default Treo email: ISP's tech support is clueless

Just got a Palm Treo, set up VersaMail with my local ISP's pop and smtp info. I can get emails fine, but when I try to send I get the message "recipient rejected, access denied." Do I need to use a Verizon smtp instead of my ISP's? (Tech support-- who said he never even heard of a Treo -- did say that SSL and authentication weren't needed, and that I should use port 25 for outgoing. All are set that way.)

I'm surprised that SMTP authentication isn't needed. Most require it now as a spam prevention measure. I'd call back and try another support rep.

Yes, use the Verizon SMTP server for your outgoing mail. Having your ISP's SMTP accept your mail connection on port 25 would be an open relay, and vulnerable to SPAM forwarding. Now if your ISP can accept your outgoing mail on another port other than 25, with authentication, fine--you won't need Verizon's server for outgoing mail.

When I have to originate mail while off my home ISP, I add a "reply-to:" with my regular email address into the message body. This makes sure replies come to my home ISP account.

Sounds like I"ll have to sign up for VZW's outgoing mail. The tech guy specifically said to use port 25 and no authentication, but he probably didn't know it's set up to not work from a wireless connection.

So I signed up for VText, the prerequisite for SMTP. The instructions told me that you access the server with an ID of 1234567890@vzwmail.net (your mobile number) and the password I established when signing up. But VersaMail has only one screen for ID and pass. Should I leave that with the local ISP's POP info and just change the one line for SMTP server, or is there another place to enter the VZW info? Thanks!

Powerdog - I have my Treo700p set up to send and receive mail through my personal domain's e-mail account (hosted by Dreamhost). My mail server requires authentication on outgoing mail, and I've had no problem sending mail using Versamail.

I don't know if you've actually identified your ISP - there may be other users here with the same ISP who have already overcome the issue you're facing...

I have a Treo 650 and a dreamhost account. My incoming mail is forwarded to spamcop.net and I have no trouble pulling my mail from there in versamail. But I need to use dreamhost's smtp server. I get an authentication error when I try to send. The dreamhost tech support response didn't solve my problem. Can you tell me what settings you use to send from versamail through dream host. I am so far assuming I have to send through smtp.swarthy.mail.com.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Len

Default Re: Treo email: ISP's tech support is clueless [DREAMHOST]

Solved:

I got a note from Dreamhost tech support on their forum which said:
I don't use a Treo', but I use VersMail on my Palm TX, and it works fine with my DreamHost account (I use POP3).

I have VersaMail set up using ESMTP authentication, my "short" (user) login name, and port 587 (my ISP blocks port 25).

Have you tried changing the port in outgoing server settings?
==========
I had come upon the same solution but it still didn't work. So I reentered everything, including my passwords on dreamhost and in versamail. Somewhere I must have had a typo in a password, hidden by the ***** . Works now.

So, dreamhost isn't clueless afterall.
