Question VZW prepay

Will Verizon service an old analog phone in a cellular market or does it have to be at least a dual mode digital?

I think it has to be a dual or tri-mode phone for VZW to activate it even on pre-paid accounts. The 2 phones on VZW's site are tri-mode, so I would guess that they probably wouldn't want to have people using dual-mode phones either, just tri-mode phones. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

HTH.

My understanding is that it has to be a tri-mode phone for it to work with VZW.

a friend last year was able to use a dual mode phone with the understanding that if he uses his phone in a PCS market he will be charged $.99 because it can connect. You could use a single mode PCS phone in a PCS market. That could have changed, but I neved asked about an analog phone.
It might be like local digital is now. You have to have at least a dual band to obtain service now.

The dual mode phones VZW used operated on the 800 AMPS/ 800 CDMA bands.
If your friend went into a PCS area using one of those he'd be out of luck. That is why the company went away from them and started to require tri-mode phones only. Now that digital service is so expansive, digital-only dual BAND phones are available to sale.

I don't know if the CDMA TracFone models sold at RadioShack are activated on Verizon, but the Nokia 2285 is a dual-mode phone, it does not have analog per the Nokia USA web site.

The Nokia 2285 is a dual band phone meaning 2 diffrent bands of CDMA. They are ok!

A dual mode is 2 different modes on same band like AMPS/CDMA AMPS/TDMA on 850 MHz

A dual band dual mode phone would be CDMA/WCDMA 850 CDMA/WCDMA 1900

hope this helps out

Thanks for the clarification.

Agreed regarding the 2285. On VZW prepay, there is so little native analog-only coverage showing on that map (it's probably in a roaming area), the 2285 should fit the bill even on prepay.
