I seen a ad for one in the January issue of the Robb Report. I think it was a Samsung phone and had Verizon name on it. I will see if I can find a link somewhere on it.

This is a pretty old phone now (2004), and I think you need to be a Verizon Corporate customer to get it. The GSM part doesn't work in the US, and the GSM is crippled for MMS and other stuff.

See http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=406 on phonescoop

I haven't heard of anymore like these, and it is still the one on Verizon's business web page.

Perhaps the OP was hearing about hybrid GSM and wCDMA phones, which are for 3G operation with GSM customers.

Oh, Sorry. That is the only phone that I have seen like that. Maybe OP will find a link to what he was talking about.

Lightbulb Re: CDMA-GSM dual mode phone????

There are actually 3 phones. The samsung a790, the Motorola a840, and Samsung PDA phone (i believe the a860i. Looks identical to the i730 pda phone). These phones only work on CDMA here in the states and GSM overseas. The best one is the a840. any other phones you see you will NOT see on Verizon. At least not for a while. Hope that helps

...and has no Bluetooth. The only advantage to the Moto A840 over the Sammys is that the Moto retains more functionality on the GSM side (MMS/SMS, PIX, data, etc.)

right... the A840 actually supports class 10 GPRS on the GSM side. I forgot about the lack of bluetooth, though.. how lame.

I thought that there was some talk on HoFo a while back that the version they sold over seas for travelers to the US did have Bluetooth, starting speculation that it my just be dissabled via software.

Sprint had CDMA/GSM hybrid phones for a while.........most of them were PDAs and Smart Phones..........and Nextel has its i930 and i940 i think and they are GSM capable as well as iDEN.........but its strictly for international roaming..........there arent any GSM roaming agreements for Verizon or Sprint in the U.S.

Both Verizon and Sprint offered the Samsung A790/A795 a few years ago. I had the Verizon A790 and hated it. Both carriers also have the Samsung I830 PDA. Both are GSM 900/1800 and CDMA 800/1900. The Moto A840 is still showing available on the VZW Business side. Whether it actually is still available is another story. Sprint has never carried the Moto A840.

As far as the Nextel i920/i930, it is Dual Mode iDEN 800/900 & GSM 900/1800/1900, which means that the savvy unlockers can actually use this phone in the US (T-Mobile, in particular). I've had this phone as well (but never unlocked it). It was a good phone, albeit a little large and nightmarish battery life. Alas, no CDMA on this one.
