hi i am a real estate agent here in boston, MA. i currently have a v710. anyways, i would love to be able to get email on the go. i also have a very portable laptop that i could get e-mail through. now here is my questions. should get get one of these newer phones either vx9800 or the samsung one? if i went this route i would have to add their broadband internet plan for 50 bucks. if i did this, would i be able to via bluetooth connect to internet with my computer? can i currently use my v710 to connect via bluetooth to the internet to a ISP?? i know this uses up minutes, but i would be willing to wait a minute or so to download the mail and dats it during the day. option 3, keep my phone as it is, and get a wireless service with another company? i would love ideally connect through a phone not through a card. as i would be able to get free in network calls. i heard cingular has a good setup. give me ur input thanks alex! |

What you're describing (using the cell phone as a WAN connection via cable or bluetooth) is known as "tethering". VZW permits it with 1X phones like your V710, but not with any of the newer EV-DO phones (like the "V", the RAZR, or the E815). You CAN get a PC card for your laptop that would allow access to the EV-DO "Broadband Access" network, but you'd have to pay for an additional data plan (and, I think, an additional line). You MAY be able to tether to the phone and use it as a dial-up modem to an ISP, but you'll pay airtime and you'll be limited to dialup speed. The long and short is that VZW wants you to pay for the privilage of accessing the internet over their network.

Hope these questions aren't too off topic: If one is willing to pay, any opinion on which of the broadband PCMIA cards are best for reception? My home is on the edge of the reception pattern - I get okay reception on Moto 710 or 815 but not others. Sometimes, I cycle from EV-DO to 1x on the 815. Do you think this would be an issue w/ VZW broadband? Can the broadband software be installed on more than one PC and card moved one to the other if desired? Thanks... |
