help please.

i recently figured out that i could send pictures from my yahoo mail and use them for my background on my razr v3c. so i know how to do that.. here is my question on sending the ringtones.. it's weird because i have been able to get a few mp3's to work on my phone if they are short (ex: you've got mail (famous on aol) or the t-jingle).. they are both.mp3 and work fine.. but i downloaded a program to edit songs so i can make them short enough to use as ringtones.. so why won't they work?? it either says "file type not recognized" or not enough space to store, even when i have a ton of space. i don't get it... help please. what am i doing wrong? i have changed the bitrate on a couple to see if that's it.. i am confused.
