Great new tool to find tower locations as well as future tower locations. Even the affiliates seem to be included. I have noticed however that some of the green future towers are already on the air. So I think this is a bit outdated. Hopefully they will keep it updated.

Larry, Nice find! I can now see why my sister's 4900 gets no signal at her new apartment.

VZW has a really good map... it's just for employees only, I wish they'd put it on their website. [IMG]

I have seen and played around with Verizons version, it is pretty cool, i think it gives more detail then the Sprint one, but sprints is still pretty cool to have. I wonder why Verizon does not put on thier website. Maybe they are working on it and we dont even know! [IMG]

Sprint actually has a better more detailed version of this tower location map but it's for employees only. I got to check it out one time. This is the consumer version of it. On the internal company version you are able to zoom in a lot closer as well as see the EOA (Estimated On-Air) date for new towers coming.

I think the Sprint map gives me just enough information for what I need. It would be very nice if other carriers were not so shy about their tower locations.

or perhaps they are shy about letting people know that the towers they use are shared, not owned?>

For most people, if their phone works, they probably don't care who owns the actual tower.

Actually, most of the places where Sprint has sites installed are not owned by them.

Most are owned by Sprint, especially in the big markets such as LA, Dallas, Chicago, etc.

Here in PR/USVI, it seems like they lease from SBA. Lately I've seen AT&T Wireless adding equipment to some of the sites previously utilized solely by Sprint. Seems like they now want to sell service instead of just providing roaming covereage.....and it took them 2 years to figure this out. [IMG]

Yeah I am not an ATT fan either. They claim to be so great while they aren't IMO. They are supposedly coming to lower Delaware, but I haven't seen panels added ANYWHERE in my town. Therefore, a massive dead zone ala T-Mobile. I think Cingular GSM is going to be the only provider who serves my portion of Delaware....dumb! T-Mobile craps out right before my town.

I wish Cingular GSM had this option, I could really compare the two equally, since Cingular GSM is still on 1900.

I can't get them to work either. Never worked for me on IE, and no longer works on Netscape.

Well it didn't work last week, then it worked last night, now it doesn't work. Bah! Java sucks! I wish it wasn't java anyway so we could manipulate the images, to put other carriers on the maps, our houses, etc. Nerdy stuff lol.

According to SprintsitesUSA they own 125 towers in the NYC BTA. I know for a fact they have much more than that which are not owned by them. In North Jersey alone they have more than 125 sites, so imagine in NYC, not to mention Long Island, Westchester, etc.

By the way, the tower maps is working for me right now.

But that's just selected towers that are listed on sprintsitesusa.com. You can't go by that. Most sites in the big cities are roof and building mounted and are in fact owned by Sprint. Most sites out here in Los Angeles are owned by Sprint. Very few are not. I would say 70-80% of non affiliate sites in the state of California (Sprint's largest State) are owned by Sprint. Many are not in tower form. I understand it might be a little different on the East Coast as co-location is more common.

So are you saying that Sprint owns most buildings they do a roof mount on....

In most cases a company does not want to be the owner of the tower...the only thing being the owner gets you these days is a prime location on the tower...with most carriers opting for co-location...most would prefer to just lease space and not have the worries and expense of tower ownership....

Yes you are right. They don't own the buildings usually. I don't know what I was thinking. I guess taking that into consideration they don't own most of the sites they just own the equipment. But they do own most of their freestanding towers out here in CA.

LOL!...that weed is strong Larry, isn't it? [IMG]

Yes, when you say "most of the free-standing towers" I have to agree. I know that most of their sites are not on free-standing towers in this area. Most of them are on water tanks, roof tops and smoke stacks. Usually, when you see Sprint on a free-standing tower (normally a monopole in this area), most likely they own the tower.

In your "defense," I interpreted what you were saying as meaning Sprint owned the equipment (as opposed to an affilliate owning it) rather than Sprint owning the actual buildings the equipment is mounted on. [IMG]

If you happen to not have Sprint you can check out this Tower Locator which will give you the location of other wireless provider's towers as well as radio stations, etc. It's pretty time-consuming but gives you some pretty good information.
