That sounds like a generated phone number since I couldn't find anything either. It might be some telemarketers, or even someone calling from outside the country. Sometimes when I get calls from Europe on my cell, I see the wierdest numbers on the CID.

It is a number generated from a telemarketer I have gotten that number before. It was from a windshield replacemnt service.

Even though Telemarketers aren't suppose to call Cell phone's they sometimes do, I would suggest you go to the FCC Do Not Call site & register your wireless # there.
I have been lucky & haven't gotten any calls but still registered my cell # to be safe.

It's definitely a telemarketer. There is no such area code in use. In fact, area codes 990 through 999 will not be issued. They are for government related purposes. Whoever it was that called you probably subscribed to a service that sends out phony caller ID info. I've heard recently that this has become the newest gimmick for telemarketers.

    Not necessarily.

According to a web site I found on a Google search, 999 is used when the area code information is unavailable for CNID (Caller ID), but the remainder of the phone number is.

As such, that call could have come from just about anywhere.

Local traffic reports in the Boston area can be obtained by dialing *1 if you are on Cingular or Verizon. When I check my Verizon account information, the phone number dialed does not show *1 but shows a number beginning with an area code 999.

It will also show up sometimes when you get a call from someone using a calling card to call your cell. I had a 999-111-1111 from someone using a calling card before.

This number is associated to a international calling card. My brothers and friends in Iraq buy military phone cards and it shows up as 999. I hope this was helpful!

I wish newbies would pay attention to the date of the post they are replying to. So many ancient threads have been resurrected lately...

Come on guys, maybe the posts are years old, but the person was just trying to help. It's not like the person just posted some irrelevant crap into this 2 1/2 year old thread...he was just wanting to share his knowledge. Whether or not it will help anyone 2 1/2 years later is another question, but it was meant good.

I hear you Andy, but there have been too many thread resurrections lately, some useful and many not. After a while it becomes annoying (IMO) than useful, even if the post isn't so bad, like this one.

    Just a difference of opinion.

Try calling them back. Since you're in India, telecommunication rules and area codes are far different that in America. Your only other option is to contact your mobile and/or landline service providers.

You might also try Google-ing the number to see what comes up (if anything).
