That's an interesting though and I think I would like to see that too, but I wonder if there would be much talk on it or if it would just be sitting there dead.

It is the number one way to keep in touch in many parts of the world, like the oceans, even in the open areas like huge ranches and mountain areas inside the US. It is very often used with General Aviation, Corporate, military etc. The company got a big boost by a DOD contract after 9-11. The Iradium satellites were otherwise due to go bust. There are other Satellite carries too. But I'LL save all the for a forum, if one occurs. It is nice to see people interested.

I think it might be best to try the "other" carriers section first - to gauge the true level of interest. IF there's enough, we can ask Joe to create a separate forum.

There are basically 4 providers of satellite service in the world. They are Iridium, Globalstar, Inmarsat, and Thuraya. Iridium, Globalstar, and Thuraya have handheld satellite devices while Inmarsat is a fixed system. Iridium is the only provider that has coverage from pole to pole, Globalstar is primarily in the Americas and has coverage on countries that are north of the equator. Thuraya provides coverage mostly in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Inmarsat has global coverge but not from pole to pole. It was used primarily on ships and marine based stations. There are land-based systems as well. I have both Iridium and Globalstar. Globalstar used to be pretty reliable until their satellites deteriorated to the point where calls could not be initiated to save your life. At this point in time Globalstar is suffering from their satellite degradation and it is not getting better until maybe 2010. I'm only using them since I have a prepaid plan that hasn't expired. Iridium is my primary mode of communication when my bag phone becomes useless. I have used the phone as far north as Barrow, Alaska and up at Base Camp of Mt Everest. It has been used 200 miles southwest of Cape Horn and about the same distance northwest of Indonesia. I have yet to use it at the South Pole since I haven't gotten there but would like to someday. Should you have any questions about plans and services let me know and I'll try to answer them for you. |

As long as you have a clear view to the sky then the call will connect and stay that way. However, placing calls under tall buildings could be problematic as when satellites move across the sky the calls may drop due to lost of sight. Placing calls in Manhattan could be a problem but calls from the bottom of the Grand Canyon was no problem. |

Agreed. But one thread doesn't mean that a separate forum is required. I'll let Joe know and he can decide.

| Probably not too good. But in cities you should communictae on cellular networks. Iridium is meant for places where there is no cell service. When I was in the military we used INMARSAT in deslotae places: Inmarsat
