Default CDMA-GSM Forum Effort (need help)

Ok-
I want to do something that I think would benefit new members as well as some old ones. I want to make a thread where information is given about the differences about cdma and gsm. One thing that comes to mind is when people ask can I activate a verizon phone on tmobile grrrr.

This is what I need I need all of you to PM me with things you would like to have included in this thread that I will make and hopefully the mods or JFB can sticky it. So over the next week please PM me with your ideas and thoughts. The only reason I dont want people to post here is because things will get off topic so please help me out as I think this would be something everyone can benefit from. If I did not make any sense please get with me and I will explain the best I can.

It's a good idea. Unfortunately, I just think people are too lazy to check for it. For instance....http://wirelessadvisor.com/Glossary.cfm

But they figure it's easier just to ask then actually look for it.....

What if one of us writes up a nice detailed description of the technical differences between CDMA and GSM and the article can be made a sticky in the Network Technologies forum? I will volunteer to do it but after September 5 though - I have some deadlines at work that are killing me right now. If the delay is ok, I'll write up the article and I can PM it to you (RJB) and whoever else are the technical cats on this forum and once it is suitably polished, it can become a sticky.

Angry How can I unlock a phone?

I have one of those Motorola bricks that I purchased 2 months before Amp'd went belly up. How do I get it unlocked so I can use it with another provider?

Sorry I will answer you question though what moto model is it. Also sorry to tell you but that runs off of CDMA so technically you cant unlock this phone. It is pretty much worthless.

Yes you can "unlock" that phone. But it takes work. You can reprogram the phone so voice and SMS work and just activate it on another network. but that particular phone verizon refuses to activate because of a pinging issue with the amp'd software. Alltel, and other regional providers will activate it though. Every other carrier expect sprint just uses the deafult spc 000000, or something similar.

You could also flash the 816 with an alltel 815 monster pack and it will work fine. However if you do it wrong it will brick your phone anyway. CDMA phones can be used on other networks, they just don't like it, primarily because of money. But if you do just use it for voice and sms tell the company that it is an e815 not e816.

Here is a more active amp'd forum you can use as a guide. Use the search function...if you are interested in flashing it....

But the thing is if you are not familiar with this then honestly it is not worth it to do this. It is very hard to get the phone activated. Not as easy as it sounds or looks.

The flashing part is a little hard yes. But programming is easy. Alltel will even walk you through a manual activation if you tell them it is a 815.

Yeah I don't think Sprint activates any ESN's they did not sell themselves (non-sprint phones). So it wouldn't work you're right.

But they can get it on any other cdma carrier besides Verizon and Sprint. They are the only ones that restrict ESNs....

LOL no offense but besides Verizon and Sprint there is not much coverage with any other CDMA. I know here in the major area of utah where there are over a million people alltel does not run here.

Well they do cover something like 100 million people natively. But there are many other small CDMA providers it can be used on. The op is in Ohio, lots of alltel there, not every where. But I am sure they can find someone to take it to use. Heck you could even put it on a alltel U prepaid account and use it where sprint or verizon is for cheaper then sprint or verizon itself most of the time.

Oh and don't worry about me being offended I don't work for them or anything, so no skin off my back (even if i like them alot as you can probably tell). Besides that may be a moot point in a few years if alltel becomes very active in the auction, they've already said they plan to be bidding at the least.....

Sprint definitely won't activate it. Verizon may, but you will have to switch the firmware, and even then you are taking the chance that an ESN audit by them will pick up that phone as an e816, and even though it isn't harming their network any, they may remove it.

Ah-hah! a glossary!! I never knew where to look, so I searched the forum for 'glossary' in the titles and didn't find any link that way. I now have it in a 'bookmark' private message that I keep. Thanks!!
