Hi Folks!
Just found WA last night and joined today. I've checked out the posts and it seems like there is an incredible group of knowledgeable people here. I'm a noob so please don't flame me for the inane questions.

I've been using Sprint for 4 years with reasonable success, particulary when I switched from a Samsung to Sanyo phone. Now I'm coming across service issues which I hope some of you may be able to help me with.

I use my sprint phone as my business phone and lately in the afternoons the service gets really bad. Dropped calls and bad to no reception. Mind you, this is working out of my office/home in Los Angeles/Eagle Rock all day. In the mornings everything is great but in the afternoons the aforementioned becomes so bad I do my calling on a landline. Then a few days ago I drove up to Mammoth Mountain and the reception was 1 bar to nonexistent for the majority of the area -- even my roaming function did not work well with lots of static and echo or dropped calls. The thing is my buddy was using Nextel and the reception was consistently good - crisp, no echo, no dropped calls. Another guy had Verizon and it also worked well.

I want to switch to Verizon or Nextel. However, since I travel to Montana and Nextel does not service Montana (not even roaming) I have one option -- Verizon.

Any of you have any ideas or observations on my line of thinking?
I'd also like to buy a smartphone and am leaning towards a Blackberry, is this a mistake, should I consider the Treo or other smartphone?

Thanks so much for the help/advice.

Ask in the appropriate forum for your region, the Central U.S. forum .

Also post in that forum since you'll get a response from larry who is one of the major Sprint experts here on WA.

Hello,

I've visited this sight many times in the past as a guest and have found the topics helpful and the different personalities of the members intriguing and entertaining.

I have a few questions on wireless phone and laptop (Dell 6000 D) service but I will post it in correct place, wouldn't want to start off on the wrong foot.

Sincerely,

Hello to 'Yall.....
I'm fairly new to the internet, "old" according to my child, and have NEVER chatted to anyone I don't know...so please, have patience with me.

It only took me six minutes or so to figure out WHERE I was supposed to type my first "thread?"...I don't even know what that is!! You can go ahead and call me dumber than Dumb and Dumber...It' sad.

Enough about me...I'm searching for a cheaper cell phone service that works outside a big city AND less expensive broadband - I think I'm outta luck there but would just like to learn more about the tech stuff so I won't feel like I've been taken after I sign up.

I spend a lot of time in the wilds of Montana at our cabin and the other time in the "wilds" of Portland, Oregon...too many people!! Sooo, if anyone has any information on cell service around northern Idaho/Montana that is reasonable, please write. Thanks!!

I purchased a Kyocera SE47 prepaid phone with Verizon Impuse service.
1. Is it possible to switch the SIM card and use it with another carrier or use it in Europe or Asia.
2. Where is the SIM card located in the phone?

1) No, the SE47 is a CDMA phone and will not work on any European GSM network. It might work in Asia on a CDMA network though.

2) North American CDMA phones don't use SIM cards rather subscriber info is based on the ESN (Electronic Serial Number).

There are CDMA/GSM phones like the Samsung A790:

Hi --

I'm a newbie and obviously have an issue that I'm having a very difficult time resolving. I'll post it here and watch closely...

I want to be totally wireless at home but my hubby has DirecTV TiVo. I recently purchased Cingular Service, cell phones, and a PC card for wireless Internet. I've also purchased a Dock'nTalk with BlueTooth technology in hopes of being able to dial out once a week to download DirecTV's guide. Well, Cingular is digital and this option doesn't seem to work.

My question is: has anyone been able to figure out a way to hook up the old fashioned dialup analog using the wireless technology, send and receive the data and call it a day?

Note: I've tried CDS to no avail, but am wondering if I can have the TiVo DVR dial out through my laptop's modem, which will conduct analog and transfer data.

I may be all wet with this idea, but am determined to be totally and unequivitably wireless.

Thanks for any help,
lwagal

DirecTiVos do not use the phone line to download guide data. Guide data and software upgrades are delivered to the DirecTiVo via the satellite. The phone line is used to tell the DTiVo when to activate the downloaded software upgrade, and to upload anonymous viewer data.

Thanks! That is something I didn't know. So then tell me, if the dialup is only obtaining info about when to upload the new info, is there a way I can manually force it and just eliminate the weekly dialup requirement?

I'm not sure. Generally, the answer is no, but you should check
