Default Best Sim Card Option

HELLO,
I LIVE OVERSEAS, BUT WOULD LIKE TO MAINTAIN A US PHONE NUMBER THAT WILL BE:
  • A LOCAL NUMBER TO VENICE, FLORIDA
  • WILL NOT BE CANCELLED IF NOT USED FOR PERIODS UP TO 9 MONTHS
  • NO MONTHLY FEE
  • PAY FOR USAGE ONLY
WITH THIS CRITERIA IN MIND I OBVIOUSLY DO NOT WISH TO SUBSCRIBE TO A MONTHLY SERVICE. I OWN A NOKIA 6230 UNLOCKED PHONE AND HAVE A COLLECTION OF SIM CARDS FOR MANY COUNTRIES, BUT NOTHING YET FOR THE USA.
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON AVAILABILITY.
THANKS

I would also suggest posting a question like this in either the Cingular or Verizon forum on Howard Forums.

Good luck and welcome to WA.

Hello all,
Recently found this place through a long time member here. I like the cell site gallery, and have started filling in Wash State.
Won't have a lot of time to spend here but will continue adding cell sites to the gallery and post when I can. Thanks,

Hi, folks...

I'm Dr.Dorothy, and my husband and I are looking to change our rate plans and possibly wireless provider -- probably also our phones, and frankly, we need some help.

We use our cell phones as our only phones -- we do not have any "land line" phone service and don't want it. I still have the first cell phone we got some years ago now -- my husband lost his and has a replacement now. We went with AT&T Wireless when we first got our cell phones and service, and I guess we still are AT&T customers officially, even though our bills now say Cingular.

We have old digital phones and service, and quite frankly, we should have investigated change years ago, but didn't get around to it. We really did NOT like the customer service AT&T provided in the past. But even more important than that, we find we are paying far, far too much for our phone service. Having talked to folks at Cingular, I know that we can get GSM (?whatever that is?) service and a rate plan and pay about half of what we are paying now, by going to a shared plan with rollover minutes.

Thing is, we are almost certainly looking at having to agree to a one or two year contract, no matter what company, phones, or rate plan we go with, and ... things have changed -- a lot, it seems since we got our phones years ago.

The technology has changed (at least -- hopefully progressed!) and there are a whole lot of new versions of alphabet soup achronyms with which we are totally unfamiliar, not to mention a plethora of companies, etc.

The salesperson at Cingular said that GSM is the new technology, and digital is outdated. I think he said there had been something else between the two of them... I don't know what the heck any of these things are and whether I'm hearing sales hype or reality when he said that there is better reception and coverage with GSM than digital. He also said that Cingular, since the merger, has the largest coverage network in the US, but just a scan of posts on this forum suggests that that is not the whole picture.

We live in Portland Oregon, and we don't need a lot of bells and whistles -- but we do need good coverage and reception, voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, shared minutes and rollover, nationwide coverage without long distance charges or roaming. (My husband has family in the Midwest, and I have family in Colorado, Georgia and other areas of the Pacific Northwest.) We would like to have better coverage in our own state than our digital phones/plans currently give us, as we like to go to the mountains and the coast where we currently do not often have service.

One of the posts above in this thread mentioned a glossary -- where might I find that? ...and is there a repository of useful definitions and commentary on the various different technologies?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I'm very glad to have googled up this website today!

Thank you all for taking the time to read this.
