Question T-Mobile Going Quad-Band?

It sure looks that way. The recently released Motorola V188 is 850/900/1800/1900, and the Blackberry 7100T is also quad as well. Maybe T-Mobile is finally opening up their phones to the elusive 850 band. I sure hope this is a sign of things to come. For me, this makes Cingular irrelevant!

Well they realized they'd have to open up 850 bands sooner or later since they have to keep up, coverage wise. IMO they should have never started disabling 850 on phones that had it, and should have allowed 850 roaming from the beginning and I'm sure their numbers would have even looked better-great prices and big coverage...what else could you want?

Is the native T-Mobile network also going 850/1900 or is staying at 1900? If they change it to 850/1900, I know several people who will be VERY HAPPY to get a signal inside a building without having to move to a window.

The native TM network will always be 1900 only since T-Mobile does not own any 850 spectrum.

Andy - while I think TM has been slow to allow 850 roaming, overall I disagree with the need to allow it "from the beginning" - it took many months for Cingular and AT&T to get the kinks out of their 850 GSM systems. Obviously, that time has passed and the 850 networks are ready.

There are a few reports internally of 850 being slowly opened up, I think in either MS or AL it is open on Unicel now.

When they open up roaming....does that mean they will adjust their prices to reflect the newly "expanded" service area?

I doubt it, but that's just my opinion. No inside info

Even though I agree with some points you make, wouldn't it have been better to not change the software of phones that were 850 capable, just not to yet allow 850 roaming, and when the time came(like now and in the near future), slowly start allowing 850 roaming, then those phones that were purchased months ago would have been able to use the 850 roaming coverage, but unless I'm mistaken, those phones that had the software changed are not able to use that coverage. Not too smart of a move IMO.

True, but there aren't that many 850 phones for TM out there (ones that that TM crippled, that is). All phone companies change the software of the phone before they sell it, so barring 850 is just one step out of many. I agree that crippled phones probably won't be able to use 850 going forward. For a while TM did sell the 3595 with 850 open, IIRC.

100% agreed, but IMO even though it wasn't a lot of phones, they still should have left the option open for future use. Oh Well...

I have a v180.....crippled of course by TMobile. Can they do an OTA to open 850....or even open the quad-band capabilities?

If not....I may have to have my boss get me a Nokia 6010 again.

I think only a firmware update will open up another band.
