Default Auto-renewal of contract upon expiration?

Is there any TMO fine print in which it states a contract will auto-renew upon expiration under the same terms unless the customer modifies or cancels service?

Three months ago my 2-year TMO contract expired. At no time did I receive notification this was going to happen, or had happened. Given that, I assume I've been paying month-to-month for service. Have I?

This week I plan to contact TMO to cancel my service altogether, and would like to know as much as possible about this matter beforehand.

Thank you from a long-time reader, first-time poster!

No. T-Mobile can't "auto-renew" your contract without you either requesting so, upgrading your phone at a promo price, or changing to a plan requiring a contract renewal.

If you've been month to month since your contract ended, you will remain so unless you take advantage of one of the above mentioned options.

If you are planning to cancel your service this week, you should have no problem. If you need further clarification, call T-Mobile.

By the way, Welcome to Wireless Advisor!

If you have completed the terms of your agreement you are free to leave at any time. Just make sure you are indeed beyond the end of your agreement. T-Mobile will not renew an agreement unless you do something such as change to a promotional plan or get an equipment upgrade.

Just thought I would add now with tmobile if you are out of contract you can change to any plan and choose the monthly option without extending a new contract

I am pretty sure with the Flex Play monthly plans, you truly can pick any plan and go month to month now.

While the original poster did not state so emphatically, it's assumed that the OP was referring to regular contract and not to Flexpay.

For the time being this is for all plans except retention or preferred plans they are the same thing just referred to as two different things all plans that are promotional are also available with month to month, the key is you have to be out of contract to have this option.

Then they've changed it? I was always under the impression that any plan that offered 'night' minutes was considered promotional. Is that not true any longer?

Yes it is now different. example:

Your contract ends 04/01/09, you call on 03/01/09 and think about changing your plan if you do pick a plan that would normally extend your contract (one with nights) you will be asked to renew for 12 months from that day. You call on 04/02/09, your contract is over you ask to change to lets say the unlimited talk and txt for 99.99 which normally requires a contract...you can choose month to month or contract, if you choose contract you are eligible for phone discounts, if you choose month to month you're not eligible for phone discounts until you do enter into a new contract but you get same plan and rate as somebody doing the contract.
