Post Unlocking a samsung t309 to reset factory settings?

I inherited a samsung t309 which is locked for t-mobile. I am unable to access my photos etc. b/c the security password has been changed from 00000000 by the previous owner. I have t-mobile service. Can I unlock the phone with my t-mobile sim in place, thus getting the phone to go back to its factory password setting of 00000000.

I don't need to unlock it in order to use another carrier. I just want to reset to factory settings. Is this doable? Any input is welcome!
