Hey, what a great idea, I get to be away from our miserable winter and also get my phone unlocked at the same, couldn't think of a better combination.

Thanks Tom

* The account must have been active for 90 days (unless customer paid full retail for the handset), and a refill on the account if the request is made by a prepaid customer. ** Please note that some prepaid customers have reported receiving an unlock request without adding a refill to their account.

* You must have a TMobile phone number.

* Only one unlock code will be issued per active line within a 90 day period.

* IMEI number must be provided directly from the customers handset (IMEI number can be obtained by pressing *#06# on your handset).

* Handsets that were purchased through eBay, pawnshops, garage sales, or other sources must still meet these requirements.

To obtain your unlock code send the following information via email to: customercare@t-mobilesupport.com, or call customer care directly at 1-800-937-8997 to obtain the unlock code. ** When calling you are still required to provide all of the information listed below.

Information needed for unlock code:

* Account holders name (required). xxxxxxxx

* IMEI number (required) *#06# on the mobile handset.

* Account password or the last four of the account holders social security number (required). For prepaid customers this can be the last four of your mobile number To Go pin code number. xxxx

* Customer contact number or email address. xxx-xxx-xxxx, or xxx@msn.com

* Make and model of the mobile handset. (ie: Nokia 6030)

* Carriers name if the handset is from another carrier. ie: at&t (please note that TMobile is not required to provide unlock requests from other carriers, but has been reported to do so for a few of their customers.)

* Reason for the request. (ie: Going on a trip abroad, or giving the phone to a friend on another network.)

*** Please note that in some cases it may take up to 14 days for TMobile to fulfill your unlock request.

Charlyee, I agree that my post above was also off topic. And I was just trying to get this thread back on track without offending anyone. That is why I used the words "any further" in my reply above.

I was unaware of an online form for unlocking my phone! Anyway, I called prepaid customer service to request the unlock code. The rep took down my info. The next day, I received an email stating that the request was sent to Moto... almost exactly 24 hours later, I received the unlock code via email along with the directions.

Is there any particular reason why a nonTMobile SIM has to be in the phone? I was glad that I didnt ship my gophone back to ATT yet.

Nice informative thread!

The non - TMobile SIM will put the phone in the proper programing mode to accept the unlock code. Some phones can be unlocked with the SIM removed but using the non-provider's SIM is the most common.

It really is easy to get an unlock code, isn't it. I presume from your post that you used the at&t SIM and it worked?

I'm glad to hear that you were able to receive the unlock code so quickly. I think it is faster to receive a code if you call in to customer service. Most of the time when you request the code via an email, it will take 24 to 48 hrs. just to receive a reply back from T-Mobile that your request was submitted for approval.
I should however clarify for others on here that there is no online unlock request form. Just a short email to T-Mobiles online customer support including all the information that I listed in my first post will suffice.

Yes; after I placed the Att SIM in the phone, I entered the unlock code ... and voilā, the V195 rebooted and the ATT sim worked. I will have to dig around to get data settings. But that is not an issue right now since I am sending the ATT stuff back.

Ah, I see... I was expecting an actual form Nice to know that emailing Customer service gets the job done.

Yeah, I was amazed how fast I received the reply. I was expecting a reply by next week myself.

Hi to all,

I got a problem: that my phone is locked to T-mobile.

I bought a HP Ipaq 6315 from ebay from a guy in Germany that bought it from USA (T-mobile user). And the only way to get this phone to work in Slovenia, EU (where I am) is to request an unlock code from T-mobile USA. And that has to be done from a USA T-mobile user (at least 90 days etc.).

Since on this forum there are a lot of you guys and girls that are T-mobile users - would someone be so kind as to request an unlock code for my phone - it is free of charge as you know - but it would really help me a lot. I would send you all the needed info.

If someone could/would help me - pls send me an email to boruto@email.si, or leave me a message on this forum.

And sorry for bothering you with my problem.

Thx

Borut

Hello Borut,, I am afraid I don't think you will find any volunteers on this forum to this for you. I would recommend searching for an unlocking site on the internet. It should cost you a maximum of $50.00.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Good luck to you.

I called Tmobile yesterday to have my v600 unlocked as I will be travelling to Australia in December. Process was quick and easy. Received the email today with the instructions.

Questions;

-Once I go through the process of unlocking, is the phone from there on out permanently unlocked? Or do I need to go through the process of requesting an unlock every time I switch sims? Ie- foreign sim A to foreign sim B?

-Once I return back to the US do I need to request an unlock to use my tmobile sim after using the foreign sim abroad? ie - Foreign sim back to non foreign tmobile sim.

Thanks,
-Giles

Hello Giles, your phone will be permanently unlocked and you will not need to anything more when you switch SIMS overseas or when you come back to the US.

Have fun in Australia and welcome to WA.

The code will change with the IMEI no. It is calculated based on the IMEI number.

I have a Nokia phone from a pre-paid t-mobile account. I had bought the phone+SIM from Walmart as a bundle more than a year ago. Recently I moved the same number to ATT. Now I am looking to get this phone unlocked. T-mobile is not giving me the unlock code. They say, they cannot make an unlock request because my account has gone into some read-only mode.

To me, it looks like a cheap trick by t-mobile. Mine is a pre-paid connection and I want to righteously reclaim my phone back. They would not let me do that.

Any suggestions/ideas. Anything wrong in what I am doing????

If you are now an AT&T customer, T-Mobile is not obligated to give you the unlock code for your phone. If you had requested the code before you cancelled your T-Mobile service, you would have gotten your phone unlocked.

Check Google for Nokia phone unlocking services. This may be the best way to unlock your phone.

Default Re: How to request unlock code:

I have a motorola Razor V3 and I contacted AT&T my carrier, and they would not provide the subsidy code, they directed me to T-Mobile, but as I'm not their customer they would not do it either?

I received this phone for free as my phone was broken by my child... any thoughts on how to obtain the subsidy code without paying for it via some 3rd party service?

Check Google for Nokia phone unlocking services. This may be the best way to unlock your phone.

This is amazing. I don't believe there are people who even support them. This is my phone. It was a pre-paid connection. So I have already paid what it is worth and I own it. How can someone else deny me unlock codes for it??? What does it have to do with me being a customer or not. It is like, a landlord denying the security deposit after the lease term and just because I want to move to a different apartment. Ridiculous......

I am sorry but you are mixing up two things.

Yes, it is your phone and you have paid for it. However you have paid a subsidized price for a T-Moblie branded and locked phone that is yours to keep and use on T-Mobile any time you wish.

This does not give you the rights to buy one provider's phone at their subsidized price, and then use it with another provider. It is up to the discretion of the original provider if they want to supply you with the unlock code or not; after all they did bear the remainder of the cost of your phone.

If you want a true unlocked phone that you can use with any GSM provider, you will have to buy it as such at a much higher price than the price you paid for yours.

Neither T-Mobile or AT&T are obligated to give you the unlock code based on your circumstances at this point.

It may not be the answer you wanted, but that's life.

Charlyee answered it perfectly. You might want to do more research when selecting your next phone. Read the fine print. That way you'll understand exactly what you're paying for.

If you want a real unlocked phone, be prepared to spend a whole lot more than you did for your T-Mobile Prepaid phone. The good unlocked phones cost upwards of $200 and beyond.

So NO, the carriers are not obligated to unlock a subsidized phone (prepaid or postpaid) which is no longer on their network. This is the case, whether you like it or not.
