T-Mobile is doing extremely well in the FCC spectrum auction.

Are these licenses for UMTS spectrum, GSM, or perhaps both?

Technically, you can use the license for whatever you want. The assumption here is UMTS.

I'm hoping, once the auction is all said and done and everyone's ducks are in a row, T-Mobile commences with a fast UMTS buildout. If they can complete 3G networks in major markets before everyone else and start building out from there it should get them customers who want/need faster data and the features that come with 3G handsets.

I hope they take full advantage of the money they're spending and move up, I think they can move past Sprint to #3 if they do this right.

They don't advertise it because EDGE hasn't been completed throughout the country and they're more concerned with the buildout of UMTS than completing the EDGE as UMTS will provide much better data speeds than EDGE does.

Cingular doesn't seem to have a problem with advertising their high speed EDGE network and they aren't finished upgrading their network....

their will never be a time when one company has all the upgrades rolled out throughout their entire network....before they can finish rollaing something out something new will be available....

their is always something new before they can begion to enjoy the first thing that comes along......T-Mobile and Cingular both have EDGE but only Cingular advertises....

your saying that T-Mobile won't advertise because its not rolled out everywhere.......but it will never be rolled out everywhere if their customers don't show interest.......and they can't show interest if they don't know anything about it

I can't wait for UMTS to take over in non Urban area's, it'll be a while and like Smartest said above, it'll never be everywhere, luckily between roaming agreements several providers can work together on that.

I had heard EDGE was available in the Boston area. My Nokia 6101 has both GPRS and EDGE, however when I accessed the web with it, the G appeared instead, indicating GPRS.

I'm in southcentral PA, just 40 minutes or so from smartestchild. I have edge in my area, I've actually be using a TM EDGE card while Verizon fixed my DSL order.
