Signal Sidekick II?

Ok. I am thinking about getting a Sidekick II for prepay. First off i want to know if the data is fast or not? And if the reception has gotten any better here in cali? I had T-Mobile a few months ago (6). Does any1 have the Sidekick II? If so how good is it? Thanks,
Jordan

Jordan,

I live in WA so can't comment on CA.

1. Data is "ok", if you're not in a hurry. It's GPRS Class 10 which "should" equal ~56K but it's somewhat less than that on average. I use the web mostly in Dr's offices or waiting for some kind of service where I'm happy to have "any" kind of net access.

Danger has improved greatly over the last two quarters. They had a disastrous multi-continent outage in early March and since then have had only 2-3 multi-day service outages. The browsing is faster than it was in February and by and large, email is better than it was. Macintosh sync is BACK, as well as the option to sync on Windows clients that's always been there.

I have come to depend on the thing as I never thought I would. I use it daily for IM, blogging, logging into two *nix boxes with the Terminal app and the Tmail "push" email works very well. You can set up to two more POP email accounts up on the Sidekick making it a very good solution for mobile connectivity. As you may know though it does not do corporate email ala Blackberry.

If you are an IM addict, the the SKII has your number. AIM is included, and from what I hear, the Yahoo client has been improved to stop dropping it's connection every hour.

All in all, now that Danger has tightened up it's act and keeps it's servers up for more than a few weeks at a time, i can recommend the thing. I don't know how I could go back to another device that didn't have as fantastic a keyboard as the SKII...and if you've used it..you know what I'm talking about.

2. I tried a Treo650 with Sprint in May and hated it It crashed, spontaneously rebooted as I added apps and it's keyboard made my hand cramp. I took it back after 72 hours.

Luck with your choice.

T-Mobile might be better, but I would question it in that area. Not saying Verizon is best everywhere, because they are not the best everywhere. In some areas the network is getting worse due to adding towers and network modifications.

Here is the T-Mobile map for that area. Make sure you have data coverage where you need it.

Hope this helps.
