T-Mobile to discontinue its T-Mobile@Home service
News by Todd Haselton on Thursday January 07, 2010.

T-Mobile announced this morning that it plans to soon discontinue its T-Mobile@Home service, which the company originally launched in June 2008.

A T-Mobile spokeswoman said that "The needs of our customers are constantly changing, and T-Mobile must foresee and adapt to those changes," noting that the company will continue to support the service for current @Home subscribers, but that it will discontinue new sales in the future.

T-Mobile was careful to note that this will not impact its Unlimited HotSpot WiFi calling service.

T-Mobile@Home provided landline-like connectivity to customers using their broadband internet connection instead of landline phones. The service only costs $10 per month and allows unlimited long distance calling.

With @Home going away. It would be nice to see T-Mobile launch a MicroCells/Femtocells like the other carriers have.

I think you are confusing @Home with the UMA / WIFI (Hotspot) feature. from what I have read TMO will still support their UMA calling feature (albeit they do not seem to publicize it very well).

Right. T-Mobile@Home was the home phone replacement that used a SIM card and your internet connection for VOIP. It had nothing to do with Wi-Fi, despite all the incorrect articles popping up on Engadget/Gizmodo and the like.

T-Mobile also discontinued their $9.99 Unlimited Wi-Fi calling feature. This feature allowed users with certain Wi-Fi enabled devices to make unlimited domestic calls provided the calls originiated on a Wi-Fi network. Existing customers with this feature are allowed to keep it.

Correct, TMO has discontinued the all you can eat $9.99 plan for WIFI (Hotspot) calling. But any TMO customer with a UMA / WIFI enabled phone can without charge (other than minutes for your monthly bucket) continue to use this feature. Very handy if you are in a poor or no signal area (like my house).

T-Mobile has unlimited voice calling for $60 now too... it kind of makes $50+ for a plan plus Unlimited Wi-Fi less appealing.
