I am most likely starting a job soon that will require me to use good ol' Nextel's Walkie-Talkie. I thought about switching to a hybrid PowerSource phone so I wouldn't have to lug around two handsets but, I noticed that none of the PowerSource phones have 800MHz CDMA. They only have 1900MHz CDMA/800MHz iDEN. Does anyone know if they will be releasing PowerSource phones with 800MHz built it as well because VZW is the only other CDMA carrier here in the Puget Sound and they are using 800MHz CDMA here. LOL

I don't think so. I think Sprint wants those phones to utilize the Sprint network only.

I was under the impression that these phones did not include 800 CDMA due to restrictions by the affiliates. Am I mistaken?

Why would affiliates want to restrict 800 CDMA?

I haven't heard anything on this, someone back a while said something about the 850 CDMA would cause interference with the iDEN & Visa versa, I don't know how true that is.

I know without the 850 it can be a problem in some areas, it has caused me to have no service on the CDMA side a few times already, and most times I had iDEN service for PTT only.

It depends on how much 850 is needed in your area Steve, you can force roam or leave it at automatic to roam on Verizon or what other carrier may be available, but again your limited to the 1900 Mhz only & I have found if there is no Sprint 1900, there is no Verizon 1900 coverage & the phone part becomes a paperweight.

Hope this helps some & I would love to see a dual band CDMA hybrid, don't know if the County would buy them, but it would be nice.

Hi, VZW uses 800MHz here in this area. So roaming really wouldn't be an option. I never really had to roam. Sprint's network is good here. It just kinda sucks not being able to have that backup. If there isn't CDMA available for voice calls on the PowerSource phones, will it have the option of being able to make voice calls on iDEN?

They don't have the IDEN voice capability, just IDEN PTT. Sprint is trying to eliminate the IDEN voice network (which is very prone to problems).

I hear you there. Back about 8 or 9 years ago I used a Nextel phone. The voice part SUCKED......bad.

Yeah. PowerSource gives me a unique opportunity I didn't have 8-9 years ago. The job that I start on Monday is the same job I had back then. I had to lug around 2 handsets 8-9 years ago. I had refused to use Nextel's phone service. So I had signed up with what was VoiceStream Wireless (now T-Mobile) for my cell phone service.

As you can all tell from my other thread, this is an opportunity I am passing up due to the reps on Nextel's side being completely inept and just flat out rude.

Prior to the County giving us these hybrid phones, we always had problems trying to make phone calls as well as PTT calls with the iDEN phones.
At least with the hybrids the calls are better & they went with the CDMA side for SMS & they have been working better as well.

Sprint's CDMA SMS has always been very reliable and dependable for me.

Actually NID border issues don't seem to affect SMS, web or outgoing calls at all. It's only incoming calls.

I dunno, I have to disagree with you on that one. Here on the NID boarder of Queens and Nassau county, I have issues with all of those items.

SMS is constantly delayed sometimes 20 minutes or more, the web is unuseable because it can never maintain a stable connection, and sometimes I guess system busy on outgoing calls because of the same issue.

Possibly, it could be because of network congestion. The site I connect to in Queens is in a very populated area, and also covers a nice little chunk of JFK. The tower I hit in Nassau covers an absurdly large geographic area and may also be overwhelmed. Whichever the case, Sprint needs more towers and sites in this area to take the load off each.

That's likely not because of the NID border but because of poor RSSI or EC/IO (pilot pollution). I've tested this NID border for years and don't see any problems with texts or web while having a -90 dbs signal or better. It's possible to be right in the middle of an NID border but still have good signal.
