Boy, was I shocked today when I went to the Cingular website, then confirmed my suspicions by calling CS. I'm heading out for a 2-week vacation to the Outer Banks of NC (Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, etc. for those not familiar) and find that Cingular has no service whatsoever there! Since I have a GSM phone, I guess I'm sunk. Looks like a quick switchback to Verizon is in order.

Yes, Cingular has no coverage on the Outer Banks; T-Mobile does. What plan do you have? The Regional (NC) GSM map doesn't include it. The National GSM map does. What phone do you have? If it has an international band, 1800 MHz, you should have received it unlocked. That would permit the use of a prepaid SIM from T-Mobile, if you're on the Regional plan. Or if you will return often to the Outer Banks, perhaps the National GSM plan is the way to go. COtech

I have Nationwide GSM service with Cingular. I have a Nokia 3600. Do you mean I would actually have service there, and Cingular doesn't know this? Thanks. I just contacted them again and they were very ambiguous in their statements about coverage anywhere. In fact, they stated that they did not guarantee coverage anywhere. I never had this problem with Verizon using CDMA technology. I'm ready to can GSM and make the switch back to CDMA and Verizon. I've had nothing but trouble since switching to Cingular.

If T-Mobile (or any other GSM carrier) has coverage in the Outer Banks then you should be able to use your Cingular phone there via roaming, which is included in your plan.

T-Mobile national map You can make out the orange on the Outer Banks, coming south from Virginia Beach on the Cingular map.. You can get a good look by expanding the T-Mobile map up to the 1000% mark. COtech

Thanks to all who replied. I'm just going to have to see if I have service when I get there. I agree with everyone that the GSM National Map indicates coverage in that area, yet the less-than-knowledgeable CS & TS reps at Cingular claim they have no service there! We'll see. If not, it's a switchback to Verizon as I've never had a coverage problem with them.

Are you a North Carolinian, randun? If you ever come to the Triad, you probably shouldn't have Cingular; the coverage here is worse than bad.

Yeah i figured they would have service out there when i went, but they did not. My dad had an At&t phone at the time and he did get service out there. Maybe when they merge you will get some service. | |

Shouldn't he be able to roam on AT&T if that's the case?

SunCom's GSM is up and running along the OBX. You should be able to roam on them without a problem.

It looks as if T-Mobile does have service and you can roam out there. I wouldn't get all worked up - especially if you are considering going back to Verizon. LOL |

All of the 1900 Mhz carriers coverage on the Outer Bank is an extension of service from Hampton Roads.

Please tell us how your coverage was when you get back. I'd like to see a report. A friend of mine has a house there, and we might go there to surf sometime this summer. (Yeah, I've got Verizon, but I'm switching to Cingular when my contract is up.) Thanks.
