Default ALLTEL agrees to purchase southern Mississippi wireless properties

Read this!...

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - ALLTEL has agreed to purchase wireless properties in southern Mississippi from Cellular XL Associates, a privately held company based in Hattiesburg.

ALLTEL will add about 50,000 wireless customers in the transaction, which is expected to close in the first half of 2003. Terms were not disclosed.

The properties operate as Cellular One in Hattiesburg, Laurel and Picayune, serving a population of approximately 360,000 in the 12-county area.

"These wireless properties are adjacent to our recently acquired holdings in Jackson and Biloxi as well as our Alabama properties," said Scott Ford, ALLTEL president and chief executive officer. "We are pleased to expand ALLTEL's operations in Mississippi and will move quickly to introduce our national calling plans and wireless data services to customers."

Just goes to show if TDMA doesnt die on its own, CDMA will go out and kill it itself LOL

I do have to say that I find it rather funny that Alltel is going out and purchasing all these smaller carriers to expand their coverage area, yet they can't even seem to get all their analog areas converted to digital yet. Even here in TN, we still have a good sized area that's analog... doesn't make sense. Maybe they'll get around to it one of these days.

Geeeze!!!! This is bad news for me. I own a business in Hattiesburg. I have two Cellular One unlimited cell phones there for employees and a custom voice mail/menu system that we use as an automated attendent. This is really bad news because the automated attendent is something I will not be able to duplicate with another service. Sigh. I really like Cellular One. The service can be crappy, but since they are a small company they are able to custom design things for an individual customer.

Alltel will continue to support the services that you mentionsed man....or at least they always have in the past. If you talk to the people in their business department, you will find them to be very helpful on issues like what you were talking about.

Sincerely,
Brad

I hope so. The automated attendent feature is not tied to the cell phones. It is a stand alone mailbox that we use. It gets over 9000 calls a month and the only other local company that could do it would be Cellular South. Unfortunately they have gotten bigger and it will be difficult to work my way up the food chain. The area manager has already said they will not custom design a service.

ALLTEL will probably switch the Cellular XL customers to ALLTEL voice mail and other services ASAP. By the reading of the PR, Cellular XL is only selling the wireless.... they may still offer the automated assistant seperately. You may be able to integrate the assistant to your phone by features such as Call Forwarding No Answer/Transfer and Messaging. I have ureach.com which is probably something similar that I've integraded into my cell phone.

The automated attendent is a movie line for a movie theatre. Very high volume. 9000 calls a month with about 15,000 minutes of usage. This is a good thing for Cellular One as it creates lots of incoming traffic from BellSouth and they get reciprical compensation for all incoming traffic.

Cellular One and Mega Gate (they are a provider of local telephone service) are now basically operating off of the same Cellular One switch and sharing all of their facilities. I know they will have to split this up and that just makes me wonder where I will end up.

I will stop worrying and call my account rep Monday and find out.
