Just got some info that the T-mobile fans might like. T-mobile just bought the Bankrupt Devon Mobile (Adelphia) out in VA. This buy will give them pretty much all of the SW Virginia markets. Also by this buy they are getting site that are already built so they will be able to turn their network up alot sooner. The markets they bought are Roanoke,Blacksburg,Martinsville,Danville,Lynchburg and Charlottesville, including the I 81 corridor and I 77 corridor. |

That's cool, was Adelphia GSM? I-81 is bad for CDMA I think, I was on Sprint/Verizon and went back and forth then to analog, ick it was messed up. It was probably my confused old phone though.

Yeah I saw it here on WA. Normally I'd be sad to see a CDMA carrier go, but I think Verizon, NTelos, Sprint PCS, and US Cellular is enough!

Yep, as of now the Roanoke area has no GSM coverage with any company period. They could use it!

They have a long way to go to fix-up that Adelphia market, I was speaking with someone at Adelphia last week about that very market and they said it didn't work out exactly the way they had planned it, they were using mostly their own network to support their sites, and it was a mess. The folks at Adelphia seemed glad to get rid of it. Some of those markets where they have service however are pretty economically depressed 15% or more unemployement...I'm not sure if T-mobile made a wise choice, but since no other GSM carriers have a presence they could be going after Roaming revenue...in fact now that I think of it, that's probably why they made this move...

I wonder what Adelphia's doing with Buffalo, where they have a network up with no customers and where T-Mo already has service... In VA, I see T-Mo dumping a lot of whatever customers Adelphia had because of credit and so on (Adelphia was offering an unlimited plan a la Cricket/Metro PCS/etc.) -SC

I don't know about them dumping Adelphia's customer base because of credit I was told today that T-Mobile was following in Sprint PCS's footsteps with their Account Spending Limit fiasco of last year....allowing many subprime customers an activation with no deposit.

T-M needs this area to complete I-81 coverage. VaTech subs wouldn't be bad either....

and all that yummy roaming revenue from Cingular GSM customers... Cingular has NO markets at all in SW VA, so even if Cingular goes GSM everywhere else, they'll still roam on T-mo there. I'm sure those 10 or 15 people who can afford phones in West Virgina (on WVWireless) and travel down to VA will net T-mo some more revenue.
