Default Moving back from overseas

I am moving back to the States from Italy. Can I use my GSM phone I bought there with a provider in the States? Do I just have to get a new sim card from the provider? Does anyone have a recommendation for a new provider?

a. Make sure your phone is unlocked
b. Make sure your phone has 1900MHz and preferably 850MHz as well. 1900MHz will do if you sign up with T-Mobile because that's the only band they use. However, if you want to sign up for ATT/Cingular, you will be better off getting a 850/1900 phone because some areas are one or the other. Since Europe has 900/1800, chances are that your phone will not work here, but if it is a triband it may have 900/1800/1900, or if it is a quadband, it will have 850/900/1800/1900. If you have a triband you may be ok and if you have quad band, you should be all set.

You can get a sim card locally when you sign up for service. My recommendation is to get a prepaid service to start off and then research the carriers when you get here. Who the best provider is varies by location, and what works for one person may not for another - so best to check it out for yourself.

Where do you plan on moving to in the US and what model phone do you have?

You shouldn't have any problem getting your phone unlocked from your Italian provider should it still be locked to the provider you got it from. Double-check with your Italian provider though.

Your choices are Cingular or T-Mobile in most areas. T-Mobile are cheaper but have much less coverage (generalising across the US). Cingular are more expensive but have better coverage and have rollover minutes, which means your minutes do not expire if you don't use them.

Like I said in another post, unless you have no credit, bad credit, or don't use your phone very much, prepaid service is probably not for you.

If you post the model of phone you have, we will let you know if it can be used in the US and on which providers. Bear in mind that all US carriers have deals for postpaid (pay-monthly) customers, so you can get a free phone if yours is not compatible.

Spero che la nostra aiuta sia stato utile per ti.
