Hi folks, I will be switching cell plans by the end of the month and would like some feedback regarding Alltel and Verizon in North Carolina. Both carriers appear to have identical coverage but Alltel is offering more minutes for the money. Right now, I can get 200 extra "anytime" minutes with Alltel for $5.04 less than Verizon's closest plan. Comments? Recommendations? Larry |

Be careful about Alltel, though... They charge you for most of your features, unlike Verizon... Coverage will be the same, because they're preferred roaming partners. All of VZW's network is included in Alltel's national freedom plan, and all of Alltel's network is included in VZW's America's Choice plan. Verizon does have a bigger network, so your features will work in more places than with Alltel, though. Make sure that the price you're being quoted is with all the features added that Verizon doesn't charge for.. Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, 3 Way calling, etc.

On a lot of Alltel's plans, they will charge you extra for voice mail too. They often times have hidden fees. When you shop Alltel, ask them the reason the mention the $.88 regulatory surcharge in their ads. The truth is that they were forced to state that in their ads as part of a settlement with the Atty. General to settle a class action lawsuit brought against them by their own customers. They definitely have a good network, but Verizon has more towers, and more digital service than any other carrier in NC/SC. |

I use both Verizon and Alltel in NC and as stated above, the coverage is comparable (very good). Also, as stated above, I pay extra for Alltel's "Package 3" which includes basic voice mail, caller ID, etc. These items are typically included in Verizon packages.

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that I am pricing Alltel with the package that includes basic voicemail, caller id, etc. Having said that, the plans are similar with the exception of the additional anytime minutes with Alltel and the unlimited nights and weekends (which I will not use a lot) with Verizon (Alltel is offering 5000 n/w). Does this change things? Thanks! Larry |

Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL is going to give you about the same coverage roughly. If all things are equal except ALLTEL being a little cheaper for you and giving you more anytime minutes then I would just go with them.

I went ahead and got a phone from both Alltel and Verizon to give them a try. Alltel will let me ride it out 30 days, Verizon 15. Today I drove from Charlotte to Raleigh on back roads and found that Alltel has a better signal than Verizon all the way. I have found the same to be true in the 5 county region I work in here in the piedmont of NC. Most importantly, Verizon does not have very strong signal here at home which is most definitely the deciding factor. Looks like it's Alltel for me. BTW, both phones are the v120e and I am having a real hard time hearing my conversations if I do not press the phones hard against my ear. Is anyone else having this problem with the v120's? Is the v60 any better? Thanks again! Larry |

I've heard some complain that the V120's have a low volume to them on the earpiece.

I have Alltel Service here in Arkansas and I love it. I just wanted to tell ya that I have no problems out of my V60i phone. I liked it so much that I got one for my mom a few weeks ago. Good luck man! Later, Brad |

I have had many bad episodes with Alltel. I got billed for a month that had already been paid. I took the reciept to them (for $311.64) . Their reply was that I had switched plans in the middle of the month. I HAD NOT DONE THIS, and my bill was pro-rated. They said the reciept was not good enough, and that yes, I would have to pay the bill. I was always a pre-paid customer before this, as I am again now. I will NEVER trust another companys mins they advertise, nor will I EVER have a contract. Thank god for Cricket. I also bought one of those Simple Freedom phones from Wal-Mart for out of town use..and yes, they are on Alltels network.
