I read that Cingular allowed you to use your own phone with their plans but how does T-Mobile feel about this?

T-M doesn't care where you get your phone from.

So I can get an unlocked phone from ebay take it to a T-Mobile store, buy a SIM card from them or online. And they will set me up with a plan and a telephone number?

Yep... I've gone into a T-mobile store and they're totally cool with it, but they still require a contract from what I've been told by a couple reps, which sucks. Cingular will sign you up with no contract if you provide your own phone OR buy one at the "No Commitment" price.

What matt and cryogenic said. I recently signed up with T-Mobile and threw my sim card in my new 7210, works like a charm except that the logo is "TMO".

Well its good to know that they can be so welcoming to those who want to stay with their prev. phone or find another store's phone more appealing. Just another reason as to why I like T-M better

The only problem with t-mobile in this regard is that if you come to them with your own phone and you don't already have service with them, you still have to get a 1-year contract, whereas cingular will let you go month-to-month right off the bat. It's kinda lame to have to sign a contract if you're not getting something in return (i.e. a deal on the handset).

TM prefers that, because it spares them the loss they take on a discounted phone. The reason they always give for requiring a commitment is that then need to make up that loss. If they have no loss to begin with, so much the better since they still require the contract.... |

Well I work for AT&T as a sales rep. Company policy is against using your own phone. They claim that it could damage our network or some b.s. They also want you to use data as most companies aren't making to much money on voice services alone. They don't want to train us on setting up your data side either. But I don't know a single sales rep that will turn down a sale if you bring your own phone.

AT&T is the sole exception to the "GSM carriers don't care" rule that I know of. -SC

I have an unlocked Moto Timeport P260 GPRS (built for the Turkish market) that my wife uses when she travels to Europe. Just for grins, I threw my T-Mobile SIM in there to see what would happen. It works great on voice and SMS, but it just cannot recognize the data network. I don't think it's a hardware issue, but rather the P260's version of the Openwave browser just does not have the built in handshakes my Timeport P280 does. And of course, if a particular phone is not listed in T-Mobile's customer support tool kit, they will sympathize with you but won't offer any advice.
