Default Cingular calls starting in peak time and ending in off peak

I was noticing on line that a call I made on Cingular in No VA that started in peak and ended in off peak was billed totally as a peak call. Is this normal? I looked around the Cingular site, and couldn't fins anything about it.

the call is billed to peak or off peak from the time the call was initiated. it does not automaticly start counting on your off peak when your nightime starts. that is a correct bill. hope this helps

What you described is normal for all billing systems. This has been true for years on long distance and wireless. The billing rate for the entire call is determined by the BEGIN time of the call. In the day when we had three different long distance rates, this was always an issue.

I must be in the minority, then... US Cellular bills both ways... If you start a call at 8:54 and end it at 10:30, it's 6 peak and 30 off-peak minutes... I've looked at my bills and for "type" it says "P/OP" for Peak/Off-peak, which is kinda cool. Granted, this only happens maybe once or twice a month at most, so it's not much of an issue even if they DO bill as all Peak, but it appears that they don't.

That's why I start dialing at 9:01 sharp!
Verizon calls it something like "double minutes"

In the Telecorp/ATT markets, if a call begins at 750, and terminates at 830, 10 minutes go to peak, 30 to off peak (assuming you have their old N&W packages). So, it's not a "standard" billing practice for all companies.

Is there a way to determine the current "system time" on Cingular TDMA? Obviously, my phone does not receive an update from the system to "correct" the time ... how can I know for sure that I am dialing at the time I assume it is?

Thanks,
ATLguy

Unfortunately the Lucent switches that cover north Georgia do not send out a signal to update the time on handsets. I have mine set to automatically recieve the time update. When I drive to Alabama, the time updates to central time just as I pass the Georgia Welcome Center on I-20. The Erricsson switches in AL and MS were upgraded a couple of months ago to sync the time. For now in the Atlanta area, the best thing to do is make sure you have your phone updated with the national atomic clock. The best source for that is 770-455-7141. This "time of day" service has claimed for a decade to be accurate to 1/1000th of a second.

Here are some better numbers for time without advertisements:

US Naval Observatory (Washington DC): 202-762-1401

wwv (Colorado): 303-499-7111

wwvh (Hawaii): 808-335-4363

The USNO number is the best as they read the time continuously, whereas the others only read the time at the top of the minute.
