I plan to take my Ericsson world phone overseas and requested T-mobile to unlock the phone. The customer service at t-mobile while patient was very frustrating. First I had to explain to them at length on the very need to unlock the phone. Finally where we left the inquiry was when I had to explain the name of the carrier I need the phone to be unlocked to. This part did not make any sense. Could some intellectual soul in this forum educate me on this. I have no clue what's the local carrier. I plan to buy a prepaid GSM card and use that to make local calls. thanks Jay |

You don't unlock a phone to a particular carrier, either the phone is locked to your provider or it is unlocked and can be used with anyone. They probaly were just asking who you were going to be using for some weird marketing reasons.

That's what I understood. The cust. rep. with t-mobile is utterly confused. It seems he was entering the info I was providing such as IMEI etc into a software which prompted him what is the carrier I wish to use. Is there a simple way to verify if a given phone is locked to the parent carrier? |

Keep calling back, usually you'll get a different person, and eventually you'll get someone knowledgable. If there's one thing I've leared about T-mobile CS, or even CS in general, it's that one guy could tell you one thing, and then the next guy could tell you the opposite! Whenever I call T-mobile CS to ask a question, I usually call back a few times to talk to different people--make sure they all say the same thing. Sounds crazy, but I just don't trust what one guy tells me. It's not really their fault, some people just aren't as educated on certain topics. Sorry I don't really have an answer as to your question. I do know that I used my T28w over in Europe for a few weeks. All I had to do was call CS and have them activate world-class roaming, then ever int'l call was $.99/min. What kind of rates would you pay for a pre-paid SIM? I wasn't aware of that option, or else I probably would've explored it further. Good luck.. Quote:
