Well, I kinda joined the dark side.... I got a plan for my wife through Verizon at Circuit City.

She is going to be traveling more at work, and her company will pay up to $40 on a cell phone plan, so I thought I'd let her give Verizon a try.

I got her the America's Choice plan with 400 anytime minutes for $39.99 plus tax. I also got her the Audiovox 8900 because it was tri-mode with a speakerphone for free after rebates.

The 8900 has a few quirks that I don't really care for though. The speakerphone isn't loud enough for one. Those annoying start-up and shut-down "melodies" are another.(you have to activate the "etiquette" mode before you turn the phone off to completely silence the phone if you want to eliminate the shut down noise(which can't be cut off permanetly in the "settings" either.).

The phones ringers themselves could be louder as well too, but it may be because the phone was flipped open that the ringer wasn't too loud.(If true it's a dumb reason if you ask me.)

Anyway, we shall see how this Audiovox 8900 with Verizon compares to a Sanyo 4900 on Sprint! I already know the antiquated 4900 has a louder speakerphone and ringers and doesn't have annoying start up and shut down noises either.

At least the phone will be free after rebates.

Since Verizon is the wireless company of choice for Darth Vader(James Earl Jones), are it's subscribers considered Stormtroopers?

Stormtroopers...hehehe

i think more and more the flips have a safety feature that when the phone is open, the ringers' volumes reduce to protect the user's hearing. My Samsung a670 does the same thing...

So you're letting her try Verizon. That' very nice! On a serious note, I would caution you about comparing services based on the phone. I know nothing about Sanyo phones but I know there have been many less than stellar reviews of the Audiovox.

But doesn't Verizon use their "testing of new phones" excuse as the reason why they take so long to release new phones?

Verizon wouldn't release a phone with bad reception would they?

Anyway, the Audiovox 8900 seems to get just as good reception at the house as the Sprint Sanyo 4900 by looking at the debug screens(same tower?).

When we have both of our phones together, I will compare how both react.

If Verizon is as good as everyone says, there shouldn't be any concern to be compared to Sprint even with one of Sprint's better reception models.

I know Sprint has released phones with bad reception. The N400 comes to mind and the A460 wasn't much(if any) better......

We also have a Virgin Mobile Slider(SE47) that I unlocked before activating on VM so if needed we could set it up to take the Audiovox 8900's place if the 8900 doesn't work out.
