Default Verizon Roaming (Automatic A/Automatic B) in Ellijay, GA

On a recent trip to Ellijay, GA, my Kyocera 2035a showed Analog Roaming, but I could not make a call. Attempting a call would result in tones like the blasts from a semi-truck. Dialing 611 would give me a welcome message from "Wireless Communications" wanting to know if I wanted to make a credit card call, etc.
Finally after several attempts with 611, I finally got Verizon. I was advised to go to Settings>Network>Roam Option and choose Automatic A rather than Automatic B where I assume the phone had been set since I got the SRN plan over a year ago. This new setting displayed Digital Roaming which allowed me to make a call. I was told to leave it on Automatic A unless they tell me otherwise. The tech understood I was just visiting the area.
Now for my question: What exactly have I done and what experiences could I have in other areas? I do know now to check the settings for roam and since I have SRN, I suppose I couldn't get in too much trouble changing from one to the other as the need may arise.

Since you're from TN, an A-side market, you should always keep your phone on Auto-A unless you are in area where you see no service -- then you can switch it to Auto-B to try to pick up the "other side".

Roamer1,
Thanks for your response. That's what I needed to know.
