I lost a Nokia 5165 which I used on Cingular's network. $135 for a new replacement sounds way too expensive when I see truckloads of used 5165's on E-Bay for less than $25. Most of these phones were used on AT&T's network. Will a Nokia 5165 from AT&T's network function on Cingular's network? What other used phone options do I have? - R |

No, don't buy a used ATT Nokia 5165 for use on Cingular. I made that mistake with four (single purchase) 6160's. ATT uses the SOC lock (provider lock). Basicly, you can only change the home SID to match your Cingular home SID. Once you leave your home area (where the cell sites broadcast the matching SID), you'd be roaming on ATT (or not at ALL!). An earlier ATT phone that permits cellular A/B selection like the Nokia 5120 should work; it's pre-IRDB and SOC. But if Cingular uses 1900 MHz in your area, the dual-mode single-band 5120 is of no use to you. I hope this explaination helps you to keep on searching. Since you already have 5100 accesories, consider hunting for 6160's and 6161's. What you already have will fit. John

I have a Nokia 5165 that was originally with CenturyTel ( which is no AllTel) and I had my service switched to Centennial. Centennial loaded the ESN in the switch, set my mobile #, and set The SID. MY phone will not access the Centennial network. What can be done to re-initialize the phone? |
