There are a lot of factors to consider such as how often you use your phone, where you use your phone, etc... Verizon's FreeUp is great if you are a frequent user. If it's an emergency phone or one that's hardly user, you might like Virgin Mobile's prepaid plan due to longer expiration dates. Both Verizon and Virgin Mobile allow "nationwide" use of their prepaid plans, but Verizon's coverage area is larger. Virgin Mobile uses Sprint's network. I don't know about T-Mobile's prepaid, but I would guess it's also "national" although their expiration dates are similar to Verizon's. I would suggest you get a flyer/pamphlet from each carrier in you area and compare features taking into consideration your specific needs.

Actually T-Mobile's pre-paid service is kind of expensive and local only so I recommend against it.

I agree Dan, T-Mobile's is expensive and I don't think the money rolls-over either, plus it's local . Virgin Mobile and Freeup are the best out there. ATT's is OK, but they changed the expiration to 45 days which sucks, plus that means they could do it again and make it even worse. That shows they do not care about their prepay customers. Verizon really does care about keeping us as customers!

Supposedly T-Mobile has taken prepaid across the T-Mobile network in at least some markets. I personally think AT&T would rather not have prepaid at all given their weird and oft-changing policies, such as the change from 90 to 45 days -- CallPlus, who uses the AT&T network, is much better. Although SunCom/At&T is not activating new prepaid customer, anyone with a deactivated suncom/at&t phone can reactivate as prepaid. SunCom/AT&T prepaid: >>local coverage, extra while roaming. >>card purchase at store: $20.00 - 80 mins, $40.00 - 400 mins >>card purchased via CC by phone: $20.00 - 80 mins, $40.00 - 400 mins, $50.00 - 550 mins, $75 - 900 mins. >>mins expire after 45 days if new card is not added before. min $40.00 card at local store is required to activate. S. Cole ps. The card selection at the local store may have changed a little since AT&T purchased SunCom. Please confirm with them. Cards via CC over phone is still the same. |

Another option, if you use the phone locally only, is Cricket. Right now, for $40/month, you get unlimited local calling, caller id, 3-way, VM, and 500 minutes LD, plus the first month's service is free. Cricket is not available in all markets yet, and if you want to use it outside your coverage area, don't get it (Cricket has no roaming capability, and no analog coverage). Anyway, if your usage fits what I described, Cricket is far superior to any pre-paid. To get the service, you merely buy the phone (the cheapest is the Nokia 5170i for $100+tax, but they have several others depending on your market...and, btw, the 5170i is basically the same as the 5165 with only minor differences, the primary one being NO ANALOG MODE). To see if you can get cricket, go here: www.cricketcommunications.com Keep the Faith, Lance P.S. if you can get cricket, you're probably seeing a million of their commercials a day, like me...lol |
