My cousin just got back from there (drove from DE). Well his phone stopped working properly somewhere in VA ( couldn't send/rec SMS's). Doesn't think much of it. Gets to Myrtle, and gets the message "You will be charged extra for this call". Which means 99 cents since he has FREEUP too. Now this means there is no Verizon in Myrtle beach...which doesn't seem right. His phone was in digital mode, so it could have been a number of carriers he was on. I am just wondering what's up with that?

Well I just entered Myrtle Beach's zip code on Verizon's website and apparently they don't have coverage in Myrtle Beach, SC. If his phone was roaming Digitally in Myrtle Beach, SC my guess would be that he was on ALLTEL's network. ALLTEL does have coverage in Myrtle Beach and they are roaming partners with Verizon Wireless. |

Yep, I looked it up too. According to this site they have 1900 licenses there...but I guess they haven't build out yet. It sucks, since he didn't use his phone at all, cause I tried to call him a million times. 99 cent roaming fees aren't fun, so I don't blame him. Dan, when does Verizon coverage stop. My aunt & uncle go to Clemson alot (son at college there), and go to Myrtle alot. She has ALOT of problems on the way down on 95, which is odd (you'd think there would be good coverage). She has some odd plan through work (teacher) that includes DE/PA/NJ/VA. Once in VA on down she cannot get a signal alot. I think her phone is 800/800 only though, its some audiovox from when it was Bell Atlantic Mobile. Still something should be there...ALLTEL, Verizon, or even analog.

I don't know Airb, its been years since I went to the beach. The last time I went to Myrtle Beach was in 1999 and I had BellSouth Mobility DCS now Cingular (GSM) service at the time. My granny had ALLTEL (analog) and my phone did much better down there then her's. Nearly the whole drive down I was on Cingular and their coverage in the Myrtle Beach area was quite good from my exprience.

Still no Verizon. Cell A: SunCom/Triton PCS (yes, at 800 MHz! The SID that all Triton markets use, 1645, is the SID for the Myrtle Beach system.) Cell B: ALLTEL PCS: Cingular, SPCS/AirGate ESMR: Nextel -SC

Stanley how can SunCom (Triton PCS) be Cell A? They use 1900 Mhz TDMA across there entire network, its a Digital PCS company only.

I have Cingular and travel to Myrtle Beach often and when there, I'm connected digital to Sun-Com network. Cingular works great all the way from DC through Va and the Carolina's and Myrtle. There's one strange thing. I have the web on my phone and when I'm home in Maryland, I'm charged each minute to my allotted minutes for each minute when I'm on the web. The telephone number shows up on my bill as 000-000-0000. When I'm in Myrtle Beach and I'm on the web, it shows up as My Wireless Web and I'm not charged a second. Maybe I should just be quite and thankful. Also, my son has Verizon and got stuck with roaming while in Myrtle this past summer

Yes, I've heard Cingular TDMA customers can roam fine on SunCom (Triton PCS) while in Myrtle Beach. SunCom's network in that area from what I have heard is good.

Triton bought the small CellOne company in Myrtle Beach; they are indeed 800 MHz, in that area only. http://www.tritonpcs.com/about/area.html - look for "South Carolina 5" -SC

Odd, but Stanley if you look at that chart that is Georgetown. Myrtle Beach is above it and still listed as a PCS carrier. BTA312 PCS A Block Myrtle Beach, SC RSA629 Cellular A South Carolina 5 - Georgetown |

Myrtle Beach is in the same RSA as Georgetown (and they have the whole RSA) -- so they have *both* cell and PCS in that area. -SC
