My contact on the properties/buildout side of Sprint offers the following outlook for metro Atlanta. This is an email trail starting at the bottom. I had started off by asking him about coverage in Cobb and in office buildings near the airport: HE: That is correct. We had to cut a lot of sites in the outlying areas especially if they were not slighted to have major "minutes of use" to make us a profit. We are just concentrating on capacity and adding to the more heavily traveled areas. ME: Speaking of capital constraints - I noticed the new Vision brochure coverage guide map for Atlanta no longer shows much of the outlying areas as planned service areas, compared to last winter's map that did. (Past Dallas toward Rockmart, South of Dahlonega, between Cartersville and Rome, between Cartersville and Canton, north and south of Covington...) The web site map still shows more planned areas. HE: And yes we are on some rooftops as well but the State Historic Preservation Office is trying to stop those types of installations or at least control how it will look. We do have some other sites in progress in NW Cobb but they are in the preliminary stages. Some still must go through zoning and some we still need to secure a lease. Capacity is a problem for all carriers right now but our corporate offices are counting every dollar that we spend. |

Sprint has cut back on expansion plans in many of their markets. Same thing in California where they scrapped some of the planned desert and mountain highways. They are only going to put their money into building sites and increasing capacity in areas that will have heavy use. The web site maps still have not been updated with the new maps to reflect this. Personally I'd much rather see them add new sites in the heavily populated city areas then I would in the outskirts.

I suspect that this is the case with all of the providers in these economic times . The moral of this story is to this is to pick with a provider that presently works well and not to plan on anticipated " future coverage ".
