I work in Dallas and live in Hunt County ( 60 Miles East ). I currently use Cingular, but am considering going with Voicestream. Cingular works good until I get close to my House, where it dont work at all. I have noticed several new cell towers have been constructed near my house, yet my Cingular dont seem to have a better signal when Im near them. Is there some kind off online datadase / map where i can determine which providers are using these new towers. The coverage map on Voicestreams website is not very informative. |

Not with Cingular unfortunely, the only companies I know of that have searchable databases are with Nextel and Sprint PCS. Sprint Sites USA Nextel Coverage Guide |

But let's remember that none of those web sites give anywhere near a complete listing of towers for any carrier.

Nextel is proabely the most accurate one on their, they don't list tower locations but they do give you a idication of what kind of coverage you should expect for a given address.

I've heard that Voicestream's coverage in Dallas is fairly weak, which is upsetting because their 3000 anytime minute for $50 is so tempting..remember there is no analog backup with VS, which is all you can find along some highways in TX. Good luck.

On the http://www.berkana.com/tower.php3 web site I know you can tell who's service is one the towers they own but what about the sights/towers independent tower companies own. Is there a way to see who leases space on these towers.

The Berkana site only list towers which have to be registered with the FCC because of their height. It's only a very small listing of the sites each carrier has because most do not have to be registered with the FCC. There is really no way to find out which companies have leased space to which carriers on their sites. Spectrasites, American Towers, and SBA are the three most common tower builders who lease space to others.

Another idea to determine the location and owner of a site is using field test mode. This will tell you the site number, sid, and true RSSI of the site you are currently locked onto.. The RSSI is measured in -xx db's a -51 is the best possible signal that a handset will recieve, a -113 is the worst. I am not sure whether or not to post instructions about activating field test, but do a Google search and you will be able to locate the info fairly easy. |

I know others have asked this before and I suppose there is a reason not to respond, but... I am interested to know what the three screens are actually telling me when I enter field test mode on my v60c. Is there some reference source to tell me that or is it a trade secret?
